Place making, Identity and Statement: When architecture speaks of its time and place yet yearns for timeliness….Frank Gehry

BKA-DPA designed this project as a statement of what we call contemporary Grassfields Architecture.
Identify was therefore strongest in our search for calm yet statement piece in this design. Safe to say the project meets every detail of the client’s expectations and brief.

The design features two rectangular skylights that light up the central structural core of the building where the staircase is found. The corridors that serve each apartment upstairs are bath in constant daylight. This minimizes the use of electricity during the day. The hallway connects both sides of the staircase and receives constant daylight from the skylights and functions as a play area for kids. The entire building sits on a bigger plot which allows for future expansion and for commercial purposes.
When the client gives you the cake (big plot) and keeps the knife (Small area reserved to design his home leaving the rest for future expansion and commercial use).

BKA-DPA is delighted to unveil our design for a residential apartment building in a soft community-centered neighborhood in the vibrant city of Douala Cameroun.

Our project focuses on aesthetics and functionality. As a growing neighborhood for community life, we approached our design from a grounded standpoint. Keeping the neighborhood architectural tradition yet standing out.

The project features a basement, two units of two bedrooms apartment and two units of one bedroom apartment on each floor. The Ground Floor serves the clients’s private residence.

This residential community style where the owner lives in the same building with commercial residential units is increasingly becoming a part of vibrant cities in that part of the country. The architect is therefore responsible to separate functions and at the same time create a space that fosters living together.

Public Library
BKA-DPA first project after our recent name change. Formerly Kadiplanna.

A GATHERING PLACE FOR KNOWLEDGE

This project imagines the public library as more than a place where books are stored. It becomes a gathering place for knowledge—a civic environment where culture, history and technology coexist seamlessly.

In a fast-paced world shaped by rapid technological advancement, we envisioned a space where visitors could explore the deep history and cultural identity of the Emirate of Sharjah while simultaneously embarking on a mesmerizing journey into its future.

The programme combines traditional reading spaces, historical archives, collaborative learning areas and cultural exhibition galleries with immersive technology halls, digital research spaces and audio-reading rooms. Within the audio rooms, visitors can select a book and have it narrated to them through personal headsets—introducing a more accessible and experiential way of engaging with literature.

The double-height entrance hall forms the heart of the building, bringing together the reception, waiting lounges, exhibition spaces, escalators and upper reading galleries. Outside, the illuminated parametric façade expresses an interconnected network of ideas, while the suspended coloured tubes at the entrance represent the diversity of voices, stories and cultures entering the library.

This is a library that remembers the past, engages with the present and imagines the future—a place where every visitor becomes part of an evolving journey of discovery.

Originally conceived for Sharjah, this project also inspires a wider question: how can ambitious civic architecture of this scale be thoughtfully adapted and realised within the growing cities of Africa? As architects and master planners operating in Middle East & Africa, we feel this profound responsibility after every project.

Grassfield Architecture!
presents the Grassfield Typology House.

GTH is a vision to blend traditional Grassfield hut architecture with modern aesthetics and architectonic features.
We embarked on this journey since 2017, researching and studying the traditional hut 🛖 in the Grassfields. The intricate nature of it's detail, the craftsmanship, and all elements of its architecture are extremely original.

Our team at meticulously crafted the first of a series in this luxury villa planted in the middle of nature.

The skylight leaves huge amount of natural light penetrating and lighting the fireplace 🔥 at the heart (center) of the home. This is a gathering place where the family seats together at night under the moonlight 🌙

The brick wall 🧱 regulates natural temperatures keeping the house cool during hot days, and hot during very cold external climates.

We transformed the very fabric of lifestyle in the Grassfield incorporating elements of everyday life into a sustainable architectural solution.

We hope that this solution is propagated to provide sustainable solutions to construction problems in Africa 🌍
