💧 WHY DOES YOUR BOREHOLE SYSTEM NEED A PRESSURE TANK?
A pressure tank is an important part of a borehole water-pressure system. Its main job is to store a small volume of pressurised water and stabilise pressure in your plumbing, reducing the need for the pump to start every time a tap is opened.
🔧 HOW DOES IT WORK?
A typical pressure tank system consists of:
💧 Water — supplied by the pump and stored under pressure.
🫧 Air/Nitrogen charge — separated from the water by a flexible diaphragm or bladder.
⚙️ Pressure switch/controller — controls when the pump starts and stops.
For example, a domestic system may operate around:
PUMP ON: 2.0 bar
PUMP OFF: 3.5 bar
When you open a tap, the pressure tank supplies some of the initial water demand. As pressure falls to the cut-in point, the pump starts and replenishes the system.
✅ WHY IS A PRESSURE TANK IMPORTANT?
1️⃣ Reduces pump cycling
Small water demands can cause a pump to start and stop repeatedly. A pressure tank reduces this short cycling, helping extend pump and motor life.
2️⃣ Helps stabilise water pressure
The tank acts as a buffer between the pump and your household or commercial plumbing.
3️⃣ Provides a small pressurised water reserve
You can draw water from the system without the pump necessarily starting immediately.
4️⃣ Reduces unnecessary pump stress
Fewer starts and stops can reduce mechanical and electrical stress on the pump.
5️⃣ Enables automatic water supply
When correctly installed with the appropriate controls, the system automatically responds to demand from taps, showers, toilets, irrigation systems and other outlets.
💧 THE RESULT?
A properly sized and installed pressure tank can help give you:
BETTER PRESSURE • FEWER PUMP STARTS • SMOOTHER OPERATION • BETTER PUMP PROTECTION
