Understanding Roof Eave Variations

Key Features and Analysis

Open Eaves: In this design, the underside of the roof is left unfinished between the rafters, allowing the roof decking to be seen from below. It creates a deep, shadowed profile.

Closed Eaves: A flat material, known as a soffit, is attached to the bottom of the rafters. This closes off the underside of the eave, creating a clean, horizontal surface that hides the structural beams.

Boxed Eaves: This style fully encloses the eave with both a horizontal soffit and a vertical fascia board. It creates a "box" look that blends the roofline seamlessly into the wall cladding, often used in modern or formal architecture.

Exposed Rafters: Similar to open eaves, but specifically emphasizing the decorative or structural "tails" of the rafters. This is a hallmark of Craftsman and Bungalow styles, where the woodwork is meant to be a focal point.

Design Summary
