Helcraw Water, City of Harare Showcase Progress in Water Infrastructure Rehabilitation

The City of Harare and Helcraw Water recenyly hosted a Government monitoring and oversight tour to assess progress on the ongoing water rehabilitation programme, identify implementation challenges and highlight areas requiring policy intervention to accelerate service delivery.

The delegation engaged City of Harare, Helcraw Water and Urban Infrastructure Projects Africa, who provided an overview of the rehabilitation programme across the water value chain from water production and treatment to distribution and ultimately the end user.

The tour covered major pipe replacement works along College Road and Churchill Road, before proceeding to Mabelreign Flats along Quendon Road, where residents gave the delegation first-hand accounts of the impact of the interventions.

At Mabelreign Flats, residents explained how a blocked pipe had disrupted water supplies to the flats for approximately three to four years. Following the replacement of the damaged section and removal of the blockage, residents are now accessing water.

Residents also welcomed the installation of smart prepaid water meters, saying the new system is giving households greater control over their water consumption while improving access and accountability.

An Office of the President representative noted that the area had gone for approximately three to four years with a blocked pipe, describing the intervention as a relief to residents who are now receiving water.

The technical teams also outlined progress on the rehabilitation works, implementation timelines and challenges being encountered on the ground. The monitoring exercise provided an opportunity for Government and project stakeholders to identify bottlenecks that may require policy or institutional intervention to keep projects on track.

For Helcraw Water, the tour demonstrated the broader objective of the rehabilitation programme: strengthening the water system from production and treatment through distribution, replacing ageing infrastructure, introducing smart metering and improving the reliability of water services for the end user.

Harare's water future is taking shape at Morton Jaffray Waterworks.

The ongoing rehabilitation of the city's largest water treatment plant is paving the way for the installation of new high-capacity pumps replacing critical infrastructure that has been in operation since the 1970s.

As part of this milestone, a high-level delegation from the City of Harare and Helcraw Water recently travelled to China to conduct factory acceptance tests and secure the new pumps before shipment. The pumps have successfully passed testing and are now being prepared for delivery to Zimbabwe, with installation expected to begin soon.

Once commissioned, these pumps will significantly improve the efficiency, reliability and capacity of water production and distribution, helping deliver a more resilient water supply for Harare's growing population.

This is more than an infrastructure upgrade it is a long-term investment in the future of Harare's water security.
