📐 ARCHITECT vs ENGINEER — What’s the Difference?

We see architects and engineers working on the same projects all the time, but do we really understand what each professional does?

In this episode of *Architecture Minute*,I break down the difference between the two professions—and more importantly, why neither can simply replace the other.

Architecture isn't just about drawing beautiful buildings, and engineering isn't just about making buildings stand.

They are different areas of expertise that come together to create safe, functional, comfortable and successful buildings.

And in Zambia, both professions are regulated professions with defined professional responsibilities.

🎥 **Watch the episode and let me know:**

Before watching this, did you know the difference between an architect and an engineer?

Introducing an episode from my new short series Architecture minute as we digest Zambia ✅

Episode 01-Does Zambia Have an Architectural Style? 🇿🇲

We often talk about *Zambian architecture*— but what exactly makes a building **Zambian?

Is it the materials?
The form?
Our climate?
Our culture?
Or simply where the building is located?

Zambia has a rich and diverse vernacular architectural heritage, shaped by different communities, climates, available materials and ways of living. Traditional buildings have used materials such as earth, timber, reeds and grass, while responding intelligently to the environment.

But as our cities modernise, much of our architecture increasingly reflects international influences.

So here's my question:

Are we developing a distinctly Zambian contemporary architectural identity — or are we still searching for one?

🎥 Watch the video and tell me what you think.

What should make a building unmistakably Zambian? 🇿🇲

Leadership 💯

It’s Dr Mizinga Melu!

Today, I am deeply honoured to have been conferred an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Leadership and Management by Copperbelt University.

As cited by the University, this recognition reflects a journey of leadership, strategic vision, and contribution to Zambia’s financial services sector, including the breaking of the glass ceiling in corporate leadership.

From becoming the first female and first Black Managing Director at Standard Chartered Bank Zambia, to leading Absa Bank Zambia and working across multiple African markets, this journey has been about redefining what is possible.

The glass ceiling represents barriers that have historically limited access to leadership. Breaking it means challenging systems, leading on merit, and creating pathways for others to rise.

So yes… today, it is Dr Mizinga Melu.

But beyond the title, I am reminded that leadership is a responsibility.

Leadership is not about position, but about service, integrity, courage, and lifting others.

To the young women: aspire boldly. There is no leadership table at which you do not belong if you are prepared to serve with excellence.

I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate my fellow graduates:
Dr Mukwandi Chibesakunda
Dr Irene Muyenga
Professor Dr Pinalo Chifwanakeni

We rise, and we rise by lifting others.

My sincere appreciation to Copperbelt University for this distinguished recognition.
