Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) operates one of Zambia’s key copper production hubs with a sophisticated and integrated processing system:

πŸ”Ή Nkana Refinery, located in Kitwe, processes copper anodes into LME A-grade copper cathodes using electrolysis. The facility was expanded to handle increased anode output from the Nchanga Smelter.

πŸ”Ή The Nchanga Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) is one of the largest of its kind globally. It processes tailings from the Nchanga concentrators and stockpiled tailings, extracting copper directly to cathodes via electrolysis.

πŸ”Ή Since the mine’s inception, refractory ore previously stockpiled due to its complex nature is now being processed to extract additional copper, maximizing resource efficiency.

πŸ”Ή A major by-product of the smelting process is sulphuric acid, which is essential in the leaching process and is largely used internally.

πŸ”Ή Another by-product is slime, produced during the final stage of refining, which is exported due to its valuable mineral content.
