🌱 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙂𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙣 𝙏𝙞𝙥: 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙮 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙨! ❄️

Just because it’s June doesn't mean your garden needs to look bleak! Winter in the Cape is actually a fantastic time to focus on structure and cold-loving plants.

Here are three things you can tackle this weekend:
1) 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙧: Pop into your local nursery for some cold-loving annuals like Pansies, Violas, and Primulas. They thrive in the damp, chilly weather and bring instant life to borders and pots.
2) 𝙒𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜: Switch off your automatic evening timers. Watering early in the day gives the soil time to absorb the moisture and warm up before the freezing night temperatures set in.
3) 𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝘾𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨: Check on your winter vegetables or sweet peas. The heavy Cape winds can easily snap unsupported stems, so make sure your stakes and trellises are secure!

𝙎𝙬𝙞𝙥𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚 "𝘽𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 & 𝘼𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧" 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣! ➡️

We just wrapped up the first phase of this stunning courtyard renovation in Blouberg, and the results speak for themselves. We took an underutilised, sandy outdoor space and turned it into a clean, structured oasis featuring gorgeous red brick herringbone paving.

The contrast between the old sand and this crisp, classic brickwork is incredibly satisfying. We love how the rich red tones instantly warm up the courtyard and make it feel like a true extension of the home.

✓ Check forecast (frost below 0°C)
✓ Water plants in morning (moist soil retains heat)
✓ Use shade cloth or burlap to cover tender plants
✓ Move potted plants closer to house/wall
✓ Don't fertilize now (encourages soft growth)

Now's the perfect time to prune summer-flowering shrubs!
Quick guide:
✓ Remove dead/damaged branches first
✓ Cut just above a leaf node (at 45°)
✓ Step back & check your shape as you go
✓ Don't remove more than 1/3 of the plant
Proper pruning = healthier, fuller plants come spring! 🌱

Friday Morning Tip: Know your soil! 🧪💩

Before the planting season really slows down, do a "squeeze test" on your soil today.

The Advice: If it forms a hard, sticky ball, you have high clay content and need more organic matter (compost!) to help drainage. If it falls apart instantly, it's sandy and needs mulch to hold onto nutrients. Understanding your soil today makes you a master gardener tomorrow! 🧤🌿

For this Meadowridge retreat, we wanted to move away from the cluttered look of the past and create a space that feels calm and cohesive.

By pairing the cool, modern tones of large-format Bluestone paving with rich coffee-brown walls, we created a sophisticated "outdoor room." To soften the hard lines, we introduced a structured planting plan that adds life and movement without adding a massive weekend to-do list. 🌿💨

From the warmth of the new timber fencing to the flicker of the built-in fire pit under festoon lights, every choice was made to ensure this pool area is just as inviting for an evening dinner as it is for a midday swim.

You’ve seen how this steep, raw site in Capri was transformed (𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 & 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 is on our feed!), but today we want to show you the how. 🧱✨

Working on a gradient like this, especially against raw mountain rock, isn’t about just 'planting.' It’s about careful engineering and structural support. 🏗️

🛠️ Our Structural Strategy:

We couldn't just throw soil down. First, we had to stabilize the bank using stone retaining walls, creating sustainable, level terraces. To connect the levels, we installed robust timber sleeper stairs (swipe for the scale of that job!), ensuring a safe and durable pathway through the space. 🪓

The final touch was anchoring the site with level paving and water-wise indigenous plants. It’s a garden designed to not just survive the mountain but to thrive on it. 🌿💧

This was engineered to 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 before it was designed to be beautiful.

As we are now in May, the sun is sitting lower in the sky. Some parts of your garden might be getting a lot more shade than they used to.

The Advice: Do a quick check this morning: are there any overgrown branches blocking the winter sun from reaching your succulents or your lawn? A light prune today can make a massive difference in keeping your "sun-lovers" happy through the darker months. 🌿🙌
