Before Vitruvius became our name, it was a legacy.

More than two thousand years ago, Marcus Vitruvius Pollio wrote De architectura, ten books that would help shape architectural thought for generations. He explored how buildings could stand well, serve people well and bring beauty to the world.

Strength. Utility. Beauty.

Three qualities with a remarkably lasting place in the way we think about design.

In the ancient town of Fanum Fortunae — today’s Fano, Italy — Vitruvius designed and oversaw the construction of a public basilica. In its proportions, structure and purpose, the ideas he recorded on the page took physical form: architecture made for the life unfolding within it.

That relationship between a space and the people who use it is part of what draws us to his legacy.

At Vitruvius Design, our story grows from that foundation. Our pillars of Utility, Sustainability and Beauty bring his inspiration into the present, guiding the way we approach bathroom design and the details that become part of your everyday rituals.

BEHIND THE WALL — EPISODE 2

Behind the Wall is the Vitruvius Design series where we explain what happens… behind the wall, breaking down the technical side of your bathroom in a simple and easy-to-understand way.

This episode looks at a two-function diverter mixer.

Hot and cold water enter the concealed unit, where the mixer blends them to your preferred temperature. The mixed water is then directed to the first function — in this case, the overhead shower.

By pushing or pulling the diverter button, the internal diverter changes the water’s route and sends it through the second outlet to the handshower.
The mixer controls the water flow and temperature, while the diverter decides which shower function receives it.

There’s more happening behind your shower wall than you might think.

Introducing Behind the Wall, a new technical series from Vitruvius Design created to make the inner workings of taps and sanitaryware easier to understand.

No plumbing degree required.
We’re starting with the concealed shower mixer.

In this installation, the hot water supply is plumbed into the left side of the concealed mixer body and the cold water supply into the right. When you adjust the handle, the mixer controls how much hot and cold water enters, combining the two to give you the temperature you want.

That mixed water then exits through the top outlet, travels upwards through pipework concealed inside the wall, and finally reaches the shower arm and shower head.

Simple when you can see it, isn’t it?

Most of this engineering disappears once the bathroom is tiled, which is exactly why we created this series.

An easy look at what is really happening behind the beautiful finishes.

Great bathroom design is about more than choosing beautiful finishes individually. It’s about creating a space where the architecture, materials, lighting and fittings all feel as though they were designed together from the very beginning.

Because when the building looks this good, putting an ordinary tap inside would be… slightly offensive.
