With winter well under way, our gardens are all very dry and trees are dropping all their dry leaves all over our gardens. This can often be very difficult to maintain and the clean-up can be daunting at times.
This week we attended one such garden where the pile of leaves was a fire hazard and caught alight turning into a real emergency situation.
If your garden is overrun with dead leaves and debris, please be sure to remove your debris from a clean-up so as to avoid any fire hazards. Make sure to use a professional for larger scale clean-ups who will take care and remove all debris from your home.

Time for our second tip in our series to get your garden in prime shape for the coming summer. As with that summer beach body, gardens also require hard and consistent effort before you start seeing results. Rest assured though, as we know exactly what to do and will guide you every step of the way. So last week we said you should start watering your garden now. Your garden should now be waking up from the winter slumber, but there is still a chill in the air, so please be patient. We have been keeping an eye on the weather and there is a cold front heading our way, so please be sure that you keep watering but are extra careful to not water in the evening, as the low temperatures and wet ground may cause frost.
You might also want to consider a frost blanket for any younger and more delicate plants during this cold spell. Feel free to get in touch if you need more info on this.

If you have your sights set on a lush, green, weed-free lawn this spring and summer, there are a few things you can do over the colder months to keep it in in top shape. Lawncare during the winter comes down to very simple maintenance but, more important than anything, is ensuring you give the grass as much of a rest as possible.

Rest the lawn
If practical, keep off the lawn when it is wet or frosty. Grass will easily sustain damage during these conditions and will not be able to repair itself until the spring. This also means removing any garden furniture or outdoor toys sitting on the lawn.

Clear up leaves and debris
This is potentially the most important job of all to help keep your lawn healthy. Clear up any leaves or debris, such as fallen branches, as often as you can. Fallen leaves trap moisture on the surface of the grass, which can lead to fungal infections.
Keep weeds under control
Remove large weeds, as and when you spot them, to help reduce their spread across the lawn.

Mowing
Some people frown on cutting grass during winter. However, if there are any warm spells, your lawn will continue to grow – albeit at a much slower pace. You may find you need to trim the grass, as a result, but try and keep this to a bare minimum and be sure not to cut more than one third of the length.

With the cold snap in the air, we’d like to remind you that your garden also feels the cold. Here are some handy tips you could use in your own garden to prevent frost damage on your beloved plants:

WHAT PLANTS NEED PROTECTING FROM FROST?
If you have already planted tender annuals, tropical plants, vegetables, herbs, etc., they can be severely affected by frost on plants from cold temperatures, damaged or killed by frosts or freeze. Also, hardy perennials and nursery plants that may have very tender foliage from recently being inside a greenhouse can suffer from frost and freeze.

WHAT ABOUT MORE ESTABLISHED HARDY PLANTS IN THE LANDSCAPE?
In general, hardy plants planted last year are less susceptible to cold temperatures. However, they can still suffer damage to early spring new growth. Particularly those plants that are already in flower.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT PLANTS FROM FROST AND FREEZE?
• If plants are in pots and portable, relocate them to a garage or shed until the cold passes.
• If plants are not portable, do the following to protect them:
• Cover the plants with beds sheets, light drop cloths or blankets.
• Drape the covering over the plants like an umbrella. Anchor the edges down to capture heat from the soil and hold it around the plants, and to some extent, keep frost from settling on the foliage.
• Water the soil thoroughly (except around succulents) to help hold heat at the soil level.
• You can place a few stakes in the ground for fragile plants to help hold the material off the plants.

HOW LONG SHOULD I LEAVE MY PLANTS COVERED DURING COLD TEMPERATURES?
You should cover plants until temperatures are back into to about 15 degrees celsius. If it looks like a couple of days of cold temps, leave the coverings on for a couple of days.

WHAT TIME OF DAY SHOULD I COVER MY PLANTS TO PROTECT THEM FROM FROST?
The ideal time is as early as possible and before nightfall.

WHAT IF IT A SURPRISE OVERNIGHT FROST?
Sometimes, early morning before the sun hits the plant, you can hose off tender foliage, and it can minimize or eliminate light frost damage.
WHEN IN DOUBT WHAT TO PROTECT, COVER IT UP. It is BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY.

Even though it's hot everywhere right now, you just have to fight the urge to head to the beach or your garden's swimming pool in order to concentrate on your garden. It's time to take soft cuttings, sows a first crop of winter veggies (if you haven't already), and plant trays of annuals with winter and spring blooms.

February is well underway! Is your garden prepared?

Unless you live in the sub-tropical regions of South Africa, It’s too late to plant slow-maturing summer vegetables this month, but in the cold winter regions, it is time to sow many winter crops and start preparing and planning your winter veggie garden.

In all regions, but especially in hot and dry areas, it may be necessary to protect newly planted seedlings from the sun for a couple of days. Always plant in the late afternoon and water thoroughly afterwards; this will give the new transplants time to settle in before the next hot day.

You know what time it is! It is time for your weekly Thursday gardening tip.

Tip 4: Perennials care!

Perennials should not be divided or split when they are actively growing in the summer; instead, do this in the fall or in the early spring and summer.

After they have completed blooming, prune perennials like Shasta daisies, lavender, and daisy bushes to encourage a second round of blooms before winter. Pinch out the developing tips of potted chrysanthemums before planting them in the garden to promote bushy growth
