Does your tired lawn need a little care, or is it time to start fresh?

If most of the grass is still healthy, aeration, feeding, topdressing and a few patch repairs may be enough to bring it back. Replacement may be the better choice when large sections are bare, w**ds have taken over or the existing grass variety isn’t suited to the available sunlight.

Fresh instant lawn gives your garden immediate, even coverage, but choosing the right grass is essential. Some varieties love Pretoria’s full sun, while others cope better with partial shade. Put sun-loving grass in a dark corner and you’ll be fighting a losing battle, no matter how often you water and feed it.

Weeds love a lawn that’s still recovering from winter. Thin grass, bare soil and open patches give them the perfect place to settle in.

Remove small outbreaks by hand while the soil is slightly damp, making sure you pull out the roots. For larger infestations, choose a selective lawn w**d treatment that’s suitable for your grass variety. Read the label carefully, as a product that works on one lawn may damage another.

The strongest long-term defence is a thick, healthy lawn. Dense grass covers the soil and leaves w**d seeds with far less room to grow.

A sprinkler that worked perfectly last summer may now be blocked, damaged or watering the driveway instead of your lawn.

Before Pretoria’s hot weather arrives, run each irrigation zone and check the coverage. Look for broken sprinkler heads, leaks, dry patches, water spraying onto paving and sprinklers hidden behind overgrown plants.

A small adjustment now can save water and prevent mysterious brown patches later. It also means you won’t need to water the entire garden for longer just because one corner is being missed.

As Pretoria warms up, your lawn will need more water, but that doesn’t mean turning the garden into a wetland.

Deep, less frequent watering encourages roots to grow further into the soil, helping your lawn cope better with hot summer weather. Light daily sprinkling often produces shallow roots that dry out quickly.

Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation and give the grass time to dry during the day. Before switching on the irrigation system, check the soil. Shaded areas, slopes and sections near hot paving may all need different amounts of water.

Uneven lawn? Spring is a good time to smooth shallow dips, improve tired soil and help grass spread into sparse patches.

Apply a thin layer of suitable lawn dressing, then gently work it between the grass blades with the back of a rake. Keep most of the grass visible. Burying your lawn under a mountain of soil won’t speed things up, it may simply smother the grass and leave you with an expensive patch of mud.

Repair deeper hollows gradually, adding a little soil at a time. If an area is badly damaged or completely bare, fresh instant lawn may give you a quicker and more reliable result.

Your lawn needs a good feed after winter, but timing matters. Wait until you can see active spring growth before applying a suitable lawn fertiliser.

Follow the product instructions carefully. Doubling the recommended amount won’t make your lawn twice as green. It could simply burn the grass and leave you with a bigger problem.

Spread fertiliser evenly and water afterwards, unless the label says otherwise. If one area still refuses to improve, don’t keep adding more food. Deep shade, compacted soil or poor drainage may be the real culprit.

Is your lawn still thin even though you’re watering and feeding it? Compacted soil could be the problem.

Children, dogs, garden furniture and regular foot traffic press soil particles together, leaving less space for air and water around the roots. Try pushing a garden fork or screwdriver into the ground. If it takes serious effort, your lawn’s roots are probably struggling too.

Aerate hard sections with a garden fork or lawn aerator, paying special attention to pathways, play areas and spots where water collects. This helps oxygen, moisture and nutrients reach deeper into the root zone, encouraging stronger growth before Pretoria’s summer heat arrives.

A few leaves scattered across your lawn might look harmless, but allowing winter debris to build up can cause trouble.

Leaves, twigs and other organic matter can block sunlight, restrict airflow and trap moisture against the grass. That creates ideal conditions for fungal diseases and can make it harder for your lawn to recover when the warmer weather arrives.

Even dormant Kikuyu benefits from winter sunlight. Regular raking or blowing keeps the lawn clear, protects the grass and gives the whole garden a cleaner, well-maintained appearance.
