Had a great time yesterday at the Build My Future event in Salina, teaching high school students from across the state about the art of hanging drywall. The Salina Area Home Builders Association puts on this event every year to give students hands-on introductions to careers in the building trades, manufacturing and infrastructure. It’s so encouraging to see these kids so excited and an honor to help promote the value and rewards of technical education.

Last fall, I got the opportunity to help Nancy with an all-too-common problem in great older homes like hers - settling issues. Over the years, Nancy’s porch had settled a good 2 inches on the left/north side, causing instability in the existing structure and threatening a bunch of costly porch and roof problems down the road. This fix required jacking up the existing roof, demolishing the original decking, stabilizing the settling and rebuilding the decking and stairs. For good measure we added hand railing all around. This type of pressure treated lumber can be left natural or painted or stained around 3-4 weeks after construction.

What a difference natural light makes! I installed these VELUX sun tunnels this week (they look a bit like recessed light fixtures in the photo) and it was so satisfying to see how much they brightened up the space for my long-time customer, John. We built a covered deck for John a few years ago and while it created a great outdoor living space, it also blocked the sunlight coming in those south side windows. Sun tunnels are unique, natural light skylights that can be a perfect solution for spaces like this where window light just can’t quite reach. If your space could use a little more light, give me a call and we’ll look at some options!🌞😍
