Go look at your outdoor AC unit right now. 🌴 If there's a hedge hugging it, a fence six inches off one side, or the trash cans parked against it — that's a big reason it's working so hard. That unit's entire job is to dump your house's heat into the outside air, and it needs room to breathe to do it. Crowd it and it just re-breathes its own hot air: longer run times, a warmer house, a higher bill. The fix is free and takes ten minutes — give it 2 feet of clear space all the way around, and keep the top open too. Trim the shrubs back, move the cans, pull the junk off it. The questions we ask on a service call — and the answers we actually get. 😅

"When was the filter changed?" → "Recently." (It is gray, it is fuzzy, and it is holding its shape without the frame.)

"Any strange noises?" → "Nope." (It has been screeching for five weeks. Everybody just stopped hearing it.)

"Anything blocking the outdoor unit?" → "Not really." (Two hedges, a trash can, and a kayak.)

We are not judging — we ask because those three answers usually ARE the repair. A clogged filter starves airflow and freezes the coil. A noise that started small is a part telling you it is on its way out. And a condenser boxed in by hedges just re-breathes its own hot air and never dumps the heat outside.

Ceiling fan spinning the wrong way? 🌀 In summer it should turn COUNTER-CLOCKWISE — that's what pushes air straight DOWN and makes the room feel a few degrees cooler.

Quick check: stand under it. Feel a breeze on your skin? You're good. Nothing? Flip the little switch on the motor housing.

And remember — fans cool PEOPLE, not rooms. Empty room? Shut it off. You're just paying to spin a motor.

Foil on the windows to beat the Florida heat? We'd skip it. ☀️ The idea sounds right — shiny side out, bounce the sun back before it ever gets in. Cheap, fast, satisfying. Here's the catch: taped flat to the glass, that foil doesn't send the heat away, it bakes it AGAINST your window. And double-pane glass really doesn't like that. All that trapped heat works on the seal between the panes, and once the seal fails the window fogs up permanently — that's a real repair, not a free hack. What actually works, and costs nothing: close the blinds on the sunny side of the house, clean or swap your filter, and keep furniture and rugs off your supply vents. Do all three and you'll feel it. Still won't cool after that? Then it isn't your windows — something upstream is working harder than it should, and that's worth a look before it turns into a breakdown.
