DAY 14/40— MASTER YOUR SITE INSPECTION

Before you give a customer a price, inspect the site properly.

A quick look can make you miss problems that will later cost you money.

During inspection, check:

Wall condition — cracks, holes, peeling paint and rough areas.

Moisture/dampness — don't ignore signs of water problems.

Existing paint — check whether it is still strong or needs scraping.

Surface preparation — determine what preparation is required.

Access and height — check if ladders, scaffolding or extra equipment will be needed.

Total work area — know exactly which rooms, walls, ceilings and exterior areas are included.

The professional rule

Don't price what you have not properly inspected.

The better your inspection, the more accurate your quotation can be.

DAY 14 ASSIGNMENT

Imagine you are inspecting a customer's building before giving a quotation.

Answer:

1. Mention five things you will check during the inspection.

2. You notice peeling paint on some walls. What will you do before painting?

3. You notice dampness on one wall. Will you simply paint over it? Explain why.

4. Why should you inspect the site before giving your price?

5. Mention one thing you can easily forget to include in your quotation if you don't inspect properly.

DAY 13/40— LEARN TO HANDLE CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS

A professional painter will not have a perfect job every time. Sometimes a customer may complain about the colour, finishing, stains, or another part of the work.

The way you respond can determine whether you keep the customer or lose them.

When a customer complains:

Listen first. Don't interrupt or argue.

Inspect the problem yourself.

Find out what caused it.

If it is your mistake, accept responsibility and correct it.

If it is outside your agreed scope, explain it clearly and discuss the extra cost.

Stay respectful, even when the customer is angry.

Example

A customer says:

“The wall is not smooth. I don't like the finishing.”

Don't immediately say, “But I did my work well.”

Instead, inspect the wall and determine whether the issue came from surface preparation, the wall condition, the paint, or the application.

Professionalism is not only about doing good work. It is also about how you handle problems.

A customer calls you and says:

“I'm not happy with the finishing. There are some rough areas on the wall.”

Answer:

1. What is the first thing you will do?

2. What will you check to find the cause?

3. If the rough finishing was caused by your own work, what will you do?

4. If the roughness was caused by an existing wall condition that was not included in your quotation, what will you do?

5. Why should you avoid arguing with the customer?
