The 60-bed care home project comes to an end.

Working alongside the Highwood team has been a brilliant experience from start to finish.

P+O Group pushed on through bad weather, tight deadlines and all the usual challenges that come with construction, whilst still keeping quality high.

Massive thank you to Highwood for putting their trust in us on this one.

Old school hoddys are a dying breed.

We’re lucky to still have a few on our team… and you feel the difference straight away.

They keep the job moving.
They read the bricklayers.
They’re two steps ahead all day.

The site just runs better.

Without them?
Everything slows down.
Pressure builds.
Quality takes a hit.

It’s that simple.

This isn’t just labour… it’s a skill in itself.

And it’s one we’re losing.

We need to start educating and bringing more hod carriers into the industry — properly.

Not just broom pushers.
Proper hoddys who take pride in the role.

Because when you’ve got a good one on site…

Getting a building watertight changes everything.

It’s the turning point on a project.

No more weather delays.
No more stop starts.
No more chasing lost time.

Just momentum.

I’ve seen jobs drift because this stage gets underestimated.

But when you hit it properly…

Internal trades can get moving

Programme starts tightening up

Pressure comes off the whole site team

Quality improves because everyone’s not rushing to catch up

For us, it’s always the main focus.

Getting the building sealed and protected as early as possible.

Because once you’re watertight…
The job flows.

Simple as that.

Why create friction when we can work together and solve problems?

I’ve seen it time and time again, subcontractors clashing with main contractors and principal contractors.

But the reality is simple. We all have the same goal: get the job built, deliver it to the highest standard, and make sure everyone goes home safe to their families.

I pride myself on two things, clear communication and being fair.

Get those right, and most problems get resolved in a 30-minute conversation.

Adapt and find the solutions.

Bouncing ideas off each other is how to get it built right and on time.

There’s no point storming into the office and saying, “This detail doesn’t work; we can’t do it.”

Exactly what we achieved on site last week.

5 minutes later we are away again with the solution.

It’s easy to turn away from hard things.

12km in the pi***ng rain is uncomfortable.

But that’s exactly how you get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

It’s hard to step out and get moving, but once you’re going, soaked through to your pants you realise it’s not actually that bad.

Most things are way harder in your head than they are in reality.

Type 2 fun, as I like to call it.

Exactly the same as dealing with problems in business.
