Did you battle green water last year? Preventing algae is way easier than treating it. Now's the perfect time to get ahead of it before pool season starts.
Here are three ways to add extra protection when your chlorine might be struggling. Start using one of these as soon as you have swimmers in the water.
Option #1: Mineral Dispensers
These use copper and silver to kill algae naturally. They sit in your skimmer or float in your pool. The biggest benefit? You can cut your chlorine usage in half.
Just drop them in and replace the cartridges every 4-6 months. My favorite is Pool Rx.
Option #2: Pool Ionizers
Ionizers release copper and silver ions using electricity or solar power. They work like mineral dispensers but are more powerful and last longer.
You'll slash your chlorine usage by more than half. Plus the ions keep working even when your pump isn't running. I recommend Mineral Lion.
Option #3: Algaecide
This is my least favorite option. But if you only need to spot treat algae, try a 60% polyquat algaecide. It works almost immediately and there's no equipment required.
It's just more expensive over time if you use it frequently. Add it every week or two especially during hot weather.

Winter pump schedules confuse a lot of pool owners. If you closed your pool for the season, you're not running your pump at all (lucky you). But if you're keeping your pool open, your run time depends entirely on the outside temperature.

The Simple 1 Hour Per 10°F Rule

Here's the formula: run your pump for one hour for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. So if it's 50°F outside, run it for 5 hours. At 60°F, run it for 6 hours. This rule works in the summer, too, when temperatures are high.

If your pool gets hit by crazy weather, you need to act fast to prevent bigger problems. Here's what to do to protect your pool after a big storm:

After Heavy Rain
Rain dilutes your pool chemicals and lowers your pH levels. Rainwater has a pH around 5, which makes your water acidic and reduces your chlorine's effectiveness.

Test your water immediately after a storm. Then adjust your alkalinity first, followed by pH. Finally, shock your pool with a triple dose of chlorine shock to kill any contaminants that washed in.
