A 5kWh Battery Gives You About 4 Units of Electricity. Does That Mean You Can Power Anything?
One of the biggest misconceptions in solar energy is believing that a battery’s energy capacity determines what it can power. In reality, a 5kWh lithium battery may provide approximately 4 usable units (4kWh) after accounting for Depth of Discharge (DoD) and system efficiency, but that does not mean every appliance can run from it. The battery determines how long energy is available, while the inverter determines what appliances can be powered at any given time.
The first concept homeowners should understand is the difference between energy and power. Energy, measured in kWh, is like the size of a fuel tank. Power, measured in kW or watts, is how quickly that energy is used. For example, a 100W television running for 10 hours consumes about 1kWh. However, if your inverter is rated at 3kW, it cannot power a 4kW appliance, even if the battery is fully charged. The limitation is the inverter’s output, not the battery’s stored energy.
Motor driven appliances introduce another challenge. Refrigerators, pumps require a large starting surge current, often 3 to 5 times their normal running power. A refrigerator consuming only 200W while operating may briefly demand 800W to 1,000W during startup. Hybrid inverters are designed to handle these short surges, but only within their specified overload capacity. Heating appliances such as electric kettles, irons, and ovens continuously consume between 1,500W and 3,000W, rapidly draining the battery and placing significant demand on the inverter.
The takeaway is simple. A battery’s capacity tells you how long you can run appliances, while the inverter determines which appliances you can run safely. Designing an efficient solar system is not about buying the biggest battery. It is about balancing battery capacity, inverter size, appliance loads, and daily energy consumption to achieve reliable performance.
