Struggling with those pesky mosquito bites?

Here’s a simple DIY solution: mix baking soda with water to make a paste and apply it directly to the itchy area. Baking soda’s anti-inflammatory properties work wonders in calming irritation and reducing itching.

Say goodbye to discomfort the natural way! 🌿

If you need tick control we can help!

From a local gardener:
This tick has been on display for us to show people for a while. After months in a sealed container without any additional feeding, she laid eggs. This demonstrates how long a tick can remain dormant and how many eggs one female can lay. Remember, ticks become active again in the fall, so continue with preventive measures.
If you encounter a small pile of jelly-like balls in your garden, act immediately! These are tick eggs and they're set to hatch soon.
Either set them on fire (as long as burn restrictions are allowed) or destroy them by soaking in isopropyl alcohol. Be sure to wear gloves if you handle the nest, as it contains hundreds of tick eggs that will hatch in a few weeks.

It’s official: Cicadas have arrived in Wisconsin!

A resident of Lake Geneva sent photos to the DNR of newly emerged cicadas, taken the morning of Friday, May 17. “Dozens are hatching in my yard,” the photographer wrote in their email to the DNR.

Periodical cicadas are found in the eastern half of the United States and nowhere else in the world. There are seven species of cicadas. Four have 13-year life cycles, and three have 17-year cycles. Of those, there are 15 “broods,” or year classes. The 17-year Brood XIII is the only one known to emerge in Wisconsin, though only in the state’s southernmost counties.

This year, Brood XIII and the 13-year Brood XIX are both expected to emerge in Illinois and further south. This will be the first time these specific broods have emerged in the same year since 1803 – 221 years ago.

Cicadas’ deafening mating calls can be annoying; after they mate, their carcasses can become a real nuisance as they litter the ground. The insects do not bite or sting; in fact, many people cook and eat cicadas; some even call them “tree shrimp.”

When cicadas emerge, they emerge en masse. Densities of tens to hundreds of thousands of cicadas per acre can be common. The noisy insects remain active for four to six weeks after emerging, feeding by sucking plant fluids from a wide variety of deciduous plants and shrubs. This feeding generally does not injure mature plants that are otherwise healthy.

The insects are expected to keep emerging in southern Wisconsin into June and will not appear again in the state until 2041.

Although mosquitoes do not hiberate in the winter, they do employ various survival strategies depending on stage: eggs, larvae or pupae, and adult. Instead, they go through a period of reduced activity known as “diapause” in response to certain environmental cues.

As temperatures drop in the fall and winter, ticks become less active. Yet, it takes ground temperatures below 45°F for them to go into dormancy. To effectively eliminate ticks, sustained freezing temperatures must persist for several consecutive days, ideally below 10°F.

Stay informed about tick activity this winter!
