Is social media killing the advertisers ability to sell?

Looking back at original industry ads can be quite insightful. The emotional value and rawness of the message reveals the true nature of buyer behavior. After three decades in marketing I can safely say that not much has really changed in how and why we buy things.
As social media algorithms narrow our vocabulary with their attempt to monetize they shoot themselves in the foot. If we believe that most purchases are really an emotional decision then how are we in the digital world supposed to do our job effectively?
