Like many great Kiwi inventions, Kiwitub started with someone thinking, “Surely we can make this better!” 🇳🇿

The Kiwitub story began in Central Otago, where physiotherapist and inventor Steve August was building a family bach in Bannockburn. An old cast-iron bath heated by a fire underneath became a favourite spot to soak under the stars – but Steve wanted something bigger.

Unable to find a suitable alternative, he took inspiration from his father’s old Thermette water heater, traditional we***ck heating systems and a good dose of Kiwi ingenuity. The result was a handcrafted macrocarpa tub connected to a custom-built copper heater – the first Kiwitub. 🔥

Friends wanted one, then friends of friends, and things grew from there.

Today, more than 2,000 Kiwitubs have been sold, and the brand is proudly owned by Dunedin manufacturer Allan Whitfield, whose connection to Kiwitub goes back many years through the manufacture of its distinctive copper burners.

Good ideas don’t have to be complicated – and Kiwitub has always been proof of that. No electricity, no chemicals, no pumps and no plumbing. Just a simple Kiwi way to get into hot water.
