I was working in someone’s garden when I saw this beautiful Aronia shrub covered with native bees. If you are looking to plant something to help bee populations this is a great choice. What are your favourite pollinator plants?

I have been asked a lot by clients to make recommendations for low plants for rock gardens and boulevards this year. These areas usually get a lot of sun and have poor soil. Irises, Sedums and Amsonias can tolerate the poor soil conditions and hot/ dry places. They are my no fail go to plants!

I was mulching this garden and realized that mulching every year really helps both keep the weeds down and nourish the plants. W**d seeds have a hard time establishing themselves in mulched beds. When there is bare soil everything sprouts up.

I know lily of the valley is invasive. I also think it does have some usefulness in gardens. I think using it selectively in a spot where nothing else will grow is smart. Filling your whole garden with it, not so smart.

I was recently asked about what to plant in a shady area of the garden. We had taken out a lot of lily of the valley and had lots of shrubs already in place. I suggested some bigroot geranium, sweet woodruff and wild ginger as options. They were all spring flowering with differing unique foliage.

It is mulching season. I have been busy mulching gardens everywhere. I have taken lots of hots baths in between.
