Welcome to Makwa Medicine!
Hey everyone, I’m Keegan, and I want to welcome you to the official page for Makwa Medicine. Over my five years of leading crews in the commercial landscaping industry, I noticed a stark lack of genuine, holistic care for the environments we work in. At the same time, my participation in ISAN deepened my respect and passion for land restoration, showing me the profound impact of Two-Eyed Seeing practices within landscaping. Seeing this gap in the industry, I realized I wanted to step up and contribute my gifts as a Bear Clan member to help heal our local ecosystems.
That’s why I decided to build something of my own right here in our community—a business that fully aligns with how I believe we should care for the land. I'm currently laying the groundwork and getting everything dialed in for our official launch next spring, but I wanted to introduce myself and share what we're all about.
Makwa Medicine is dedicated to ecologically conscious landscaping, built fundamentally on a Two-Eyed Seeing approach. What does that actually look like on your property? It means looking at the land through two lenses: bringing the highest standards of professional horticultural practices together with a deep respect for the ecosystem that has been developing here for hundreds of years. My goal is never to "culture shock" a yard with aggressive clear-cutting, heavy machinery, or harsh chemicals. Instead, we acknowledge what is already established and make mindful accommodations to transition the space so it can naturally thrive.
This philosophy drives our design work—focusing on replacing common ornamentals with plants that actually belong here and feed our local ecosystem. Think planting a native Serviceberry instead of an invasive Bradford pear, a Spicebush instead of an invasive burning bush, or a beautiful Eastern Redbud instead of a non-native Norway maple.
It also dictates our day-to-day property care:
🌱 Low-Impact Lawn Maintenance: Quiet, emission-free, and respectful. By running exclusively commercial battery-powered equipment, we cut the neighborhood noise and the exhaust fumes. We pair that with proper turf management techniques and organic materials to build real soil health, rather than just forcing a temporary green-up.
🍂 Mindful Garden Bed Care: No standard "hack and slash" yard work here. I bring educated, professional care to your garden beds that is fundamentally grounded in a relationship with the land. We focus on proper pruning and thoughtful management to gently guide the landscape rather than traumatize it, working at the pace of the seasons.
🔨 Custom Outdoor Structures: Because a yard is meant to be lived in, I also bring my carpentry background to the table. Whether you need a functional fence, a deck, or a custom arbour-style trellis to anchor the garden, we build structures that honor and naturally blend into their surroundings.
🌺 Pollinator & Native Gardens: Ultimately, this is where the real medicine happens. We specialize in designing and installing native plant gardens and pollinator sanctuaries that bring life back to your property.
By actively restoring native Ontario species to our neighborhoods, we can transform sterile, high-maintenance lawns into vibrant, living ecosystems that support our local bees, birds, and butterflies. I’ll be using this space over the next several months to share updates, showcase some builds, and talk about the practices that make our local Southwestern Ontario environment thrive.
