A question as old as time itself, TO TAPE, or not NOT TO TAPE!

I’m a firm believer in taking a little longer to make it a little easier. For jobs like this where you’re likely to be doing 3 coats at least it’s a not brainer.

Not to mention, the lines will be RAZOR sharp and let’s face it, who doesn’t like a sharp line on a window, especially an older one. It just brings it up to a higher standard and looks clean!

Yes it’s a bit slower but taping this whole window took me 7 mins, longer than most people spend trying to get hand pulled lines straight. Either way it’s my method and it works for me. Also, doing all your verticals then your horizontals rather than pane by pane is quicker too, trust me.

Tape used here is precision line tape which won’t be beaten in my opinion. Lasts the duration and removes with ease💪💪💪

Lastly, have to credit for this super nice choppy mix of Olivia deans ‘a couple minutes’.👌

First big external of the year kicked off a little earlier than usual!!!

Client wanted its bi-annual maintenance coat over the whole property. Windows were in really good condition throughout (and that’s down to regular maintenance) so only needed light prep and a recoat. The sun room had some cracks and joins that had opened up on the sills and facias so they were all routered out and got the Repair Care International UK treatment. Made sure to tint the resin to help with the stain opacity. Colour matched it almost perfect to the existing stain so only took 2 coats to blend in and it’ll never open up or split again.

Also as a last little treat I gave the client the offer to change the front door colour. Was originally gloss brown but now it’s colour matched in with the surrounding cladding and it really livens up the front entrance! Not everything has to stay the same, sometimes it’s worth having a little change!!

Amongst brutal wind, beaming sunshine and odd showers I managed to get the whole property done and it will remain protected till 2028 when I do it all over again!

Couple of room refreshes over at after new window installation meant the reveals had to be replastered.

Lots or filling and making good of the existing walls and new plaster work that wasn’t exactly good quality, but is it ever anymore? Me and the client also decided it was better to fit a new MDF window board over the existing tiled sill in the cloakroom which made it look a lot cleaner and usable.

Downstairs toilet is little Greene Portland stone all over with whimborne white on the woodwork and the main bathroom is farrow and ball ‘dinnerware’ with whimborne white on the woodwork and ceiling. Lovely combination even if it did take up to 8 coats in some places on the woodwork, shocking opacity for a ‘premium’ paint.

Presto R filler is a dream for skimming out walls and removing imperfections, goes on a treat and sands equally as nice!

brushed and rollers were used and I’m still finding new brushes I love every time I dip into my stash!

Busy, busy week doing this little store/play room!

Unbelievable amount of prep and surface area to cover on this little unit. Lots of MDF to prep, all the shelves were made out of PLY and needed a lot of making good before they were finished too, all 28 of them needed 3 coats both sides too😴

As much as it’s a graft and the labour is intense, this is where I think I thrive, the ‘preppy jobs’. I used to hate prepping because I just wanted to get paint on but over time, I’ve switched my ways and find myself prepping for days before I really start getting product on and that’s where the finish comes from! I could go on forever making things flawless if time and money allowed but you have to draw the line somewhere I guess!

Colour is a mylands colour called ‘Hoxton grey’ and as always, was finished in everal aqua 10, my go to finish for cabinetry as it just gives the classiest finish but remains ultra hard wearing💪💪💪

Simple little double sided, double grit sanding block when the machine sander is just a little too aggressive!! Knock it back with one side, perfect it with the other.

Cheap, easy and effective!

Little bit of a self appreciation here but BSA DECOR is 5 years old! What started out as a ‘I have no idea what I want to do with my life’ has grown into a respected, appreciated and recommended name.

A little bit of background about me for anyone that didn’t know, after leaving school nearly 25 years ago I worked at a painters apprentice and hated every second because I did no real painting work. Just made tea, swept up and basically got treated like a slave so after about 8 months I jacked in. Various other jobs followed but I eventually found myself working as a body piercer/manager of an alternative fashion shop where I felt at home in regard to my tattoos and piercings.

After nearly 10 years there I had to get out and the only thing I knew was painting. A call to led me to where I am now. I worked for them for about 2 years and learned a lot as I was almost starting with zero knowledge and I’m thankful they took a chance on me but like all good things they come to an end and I felt like I wanted to work for myself and made the move to go solo!

A good year or so of working day and night, some weeks nearly 80 hours a week just trying to get the work in, build a name and build some credibility in the trade and with my local town. It was a graft and something I wasn’t overly prepared for, some nights getting home at 11pm and then back to work at 7am the next day but it paid off. Over time the money got better, the jobs calmed down and I felt like I’d found a rhythm and a client base that respected me enough to pay my rates and allow me to do what I need to do, often regardless of time and money but purely with the finish in mind.

From absolute zero clue about what I’m doing to now working in multi million pound properties, being an ambassador to some of the leading brands in the industry, representing companies at trade events and being mentioned in the same breath as some of the best painters the uk has and probably will ever see is something I’m really bloody proud of.

From a once upon a time drug addict and high school drop out to a self built business isn’t something to be ignored. If I can managed it, so can you!
