💥 FREE PLANTS 💥 This is a beautiful time of year to collect the seeds from your favorite native species to start more future plants than your bank account would ever allow! Whether from your yard or favorite local hiking spot, start collecting ripe seed heads and combine them to make seed mixes that you can sow into a sheet mulched surface (2-3 layers of uncoated, tape-free carboard on top of grass or whatever presently resides and topped with 4-6" untreated + undyed wood mulch) to cold-stratify (be exposed to prolong cold via over-wintering) and sprout forth next year. I'll be sowing this mix of river oats, hyssop, mountain mint, New England aster, and cut leaf coneflower into several areas I sheet mulched this year; using these spaces a "nurseries" of sorts to stock the rest of my site.

🎃 FALL FOOD FOREST 🎃 Due to sustained warmth and ample moisture, the summer crops continue to persist where they're allowed in my front yard . I've transitioned most of the beds to cold weather crops to feed us throughout the fall + winter months and will be seeding crimson clover in the rest of the beds as a cover crop that will double as a sustainable, nutrient-dense food source for our Silver Fox heritage breed meat rabbits. I'll be breeding all three does at the end of the winter and once their kits are old enough to begin to venture away from their mothers as their primary source of sustenance, I'll begin to provide everyone with a biodiverse array of fresh greens foraged from our 1-acre .

🧄🧅🥬🌰🍄 This fall, I've sowed 1000 onion sets, 230 or so garlic cloves, radishes, spinach, arugula, cabbage, kale, bok choy, carrots, cilantro, lettuce, chamomile, and more as our annual, cold-weather food producers. I've been harvesting turkey tail mushrooms like mad, have started to harvest our site's first hazelnuts, and will be planting out some goumi, honeyberry, gooseberry, and raspberry cuttings later today to further bolster our existing perennial food supply. The weather is set to turn this weekend, so many of the plants continuing to thrive will likely struggle beyond that. It's a bittersweet time of year, as always. I'm feeling gratitude for all the abundance we've been given by our once grass-covered, 1-acre oasis, and feeling thankful to be nearing the end of my busiest half of the year.

🍂 COLD SEASON CROPS 🍂 If you’d like to grow something passively throughout the fall and winter months, my favorite crops are garlic and onions! If you’re in the northern hemisphere, there’s still time left to get them in the ground. 

🧄 GARLIC: If planting garlic, most online sources are out of stock this time of year, but you can simply go to the store and purchase your favorite organic varieties. Break the bulb apart and plant the largest cloves from each bulb as these will produce the largest heads. Plant the cloves pointed side up and plant them 2” deep and 6” apart. 

🧅. ONIONS: I grow my onions from onion sets, which are immature onion bulbs and this time of year, you can usually find them in bulk at your local farm supply store. Plant them 1” deep, 2-3” apart, again, with the pointed side upward. 

💚 CARE/ HARVEST: These crops will grow passively throughout the fall + winter months and will be ready to harvest the following June; give or take. Once they’ve sprouted, you can add a nice layer of leaves, grass clippings, or straw to retain moisture and insulate them from temperature extremes. Don’t be surprised when the green vegetation dies back, however, as this is normal once winter temperatures set in. The bulb will bounce back and begin growing with fury once more when the temperatures rise again late-winter/ early spring.

🛒 MARKET GARDEN SKETCH 🛒 A lovely couple reached out to me earlier this year desiring guidance on how to lay out their for sustainable, abundant success. They wanted to be incredibly thoughtful with the space available, and desired to grow a biodiverse array of annual + perennial foods that would feed their household as well as be sold at market.

✅ ANNUALS: A mixture of raised beds, hügelkultur, and in-ground space has been dedicated to annuals; with crops planted specifically to provide a regenerative source of fertilizer, so they never have to purchase soil amendments. 

✅ PERENNIALS: Perennial food crops are concentrated on the outer and inner perimeter of the space, along with a community of surrounding plants meant to care for the food-producers organically throughout the course of their lives.

✅ CHICKENS + COMPOST: A small, existing chicken coop has been integrated within the design and is situated next to the site's main compost bins, so the compost can be churned into "black gold" for the garden passively, while reducing the feed costs for the flock. They'll be let to forage here and there within the space to clean up after harvest and reduce pest pressure.

✅ LIVING + WORKING: A seating/ processing/ workshop space is found at the end of a food-producing tunnel and will be a welcomed source of shade in the height of the summer, thanks to the perennial vining crops creating a lush, living ceiling overhead.

🌈 FINAL TOURS OF 2026 🌈 This past weekend, I hosted the last 2 homestead tours of 2026; ending the year with having shared my site with nearly 350 people in total! My goal in sharing my homestead oasis is to show others what's attainable as 1 person on 1-acre. When I separated from my children's father nearly 7 years ago, I struggled to believe in my ability to homestead alone. I didn't see how I could accomplish my goals solo. However, I persisted, even though my confidence wasn't yet built up. I followed my intuition which led me to my present-day site and continued to listen to it as I transitioned more and more of my site from grass-to-garden all on my own; tapping into society's "waste-streams" in order to do it in an economical and truly sustainable manner. 

🌱 My goal as a human on this planet at this time in history is to help encourage and empower more people to grow more of their own food and become more self-sustaining. We are all FAR MORE POWERFUL than we've been led to believe. All that's needed to unlock this potential is to take one step at a time toward greater self-reliance and in doing so, that power begins to seep out of our every pore and gain momentum along the way.

🏘️ NEIGHBORHOOD HOMESTEADING 🏘️ Do you live in an urban or suburban neighborhood and have a desire to grow more of your own food in community with your neighbors?! I'm taking on 5 neighborhoods as clients in 2027 for a 1-year long contract to help them work toward creating sustainable food production systems and to homestead collectively as a community. No prior gardening or homesteading experience is necessary. All that's needed is at least 5 residences from the same neighborhood and a genuine desire to work toward greater self-sufficiency together. Taking the skills I have based in my roots as a group therapist and blending it with my work as a permaculture designer, I'm offering a new branch of my business where I help guide neighborhoods through the process of becoming a homesteading collective. Here's what's included:

✅ INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATION: Each household will obtain their own individual consultation where we discuss the roles they'll provide for the collective; hosting annual gardens, berry patches, orchards, mushroom production, compost generation, egg and/or meat production, culinary herb production, etc.

✅ SHOPPING LIST: Following the consultation, a "shopping list" will be provided for each residence based on their chosen food production "elements" as well as guidance on where to position everything.

✅ COMMUNITY MEETINGS: 4 meetings are facilitated by myself throughout the year to organize efforts and connect neighbors. You don't have to know one another well at first; a desire to work together is all that's needed.

✅ STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS will be provided for the neighborhood to guide your efforts from goal-setting to implementation.

✅ (live) EDUCATIONAL CLASSES are provided to ensure each residence feels confident in the roles they'll provide the collective.

🦃 TURKEY TAILS 🦃 Contrary to what we've been told, this world of ours is an abundant one and all that's needed to tap into this wealth of resources is a shift of perspective; a shift away from rabid consumption to that of thoughtful awe and respect for the natural world. In order to keep capitalism going strong, it's imperative that we remain blind to that which already surrounds us, so that we hop on the internet and "pay for it" with money instead.

💚 Take these for instance. People pay a pretty penny for these guys due to the long list of benefits they afford to use humans, and yet, here they are. I have them growing in great abundance on my property because I use society's "discards" (wood mulch + logs generally carted to the dump) to create my annual + perennial food production systems all about my 1-acre homestead. Logs and woodchips are obtained for free through ChipDrop and are used to stifle unwanted vegetation and to create drought-resistant gardens as they retain moisture like no other. Mushrooms of all types spring forth because their ideal climate has been created as a byproduct of my food-producing activities. I harvested around 2 pounds in about 15 minutes and dehydrated them to use in broths and teas throughout the fall + winter months.

💙 BLUE HUBBARD 💙 I grew more squash this year than I have in the past, as I wanted to have a bountiful, varied store of produce going into the winter months. One of the varieties I planted was 'Blue Hubbard' squash; an heirloom winter variety weighing anywhere from 10-20 pounds on average; though they can far exceed that. After harvesting garlic in late June, I amended the bed with fresh compost and then direct-sowed squash varieties that are known for being good "winter keepers." That is, they store well throughout the winter months without going bad.

🥔🍠🧄🧅🍏 I store all my roots, squash, dried herbs + other produce, and food storage in my ; a small, dark, cool room in my basement under my front porch. Ideally, such spaces are kept within 50-55 degrees F and 50-70% humidity. These conditions allow produce to be stored for extended periods without the use of electricity. Root cellars are a feature that used to be essential to every residence. I hope this comes back into fashion as a household staple again!

🥣 Last night, I roasted a 'Blue Hubbard' that had been left on the vine too long (was a bit soft and unsuitable for "keeping") and turned it into nourishing, creamy soup; 'twas the perfect companion to the cool, cloudy fall day that was upon me 🥰. I topped it with sour cream + loads of fresh garlic chives from the yard and OH MY GOURD (🤓 see what I did there?), I can't wait to have it again for lunch later today!

✏️ HOMESTEAD SKETCH ✏️ Every design of mine starts with pencil + paper. I think best with tangible tools in-hand and then draft the design on the computer to ensure it's easy to understand once my clients receive the finished design(s). This particular project will contain 3 separate designs that will each serve different functions for my clients who are desiring greater self-sufficiency on acreage they purchased last year. The backyard is where their annual garden beds, compost system, and rows of deer-resistant/ deterrent berry bushes, shrubs, and small trees will be housed. The front yard will be populated with native, medicinal and bouquet-making vegetation, mushroom beds, and a nice space to sit and enjoy a fresh cup of tea made with ingredients harvested from the very space they're sipping it within. Their orchard will exist a bit further out from their residence and will contain species that are tolerant of the many surrounding, mature black walnuts on their property.
