MILLWORK | CAFE + RESTAURANT

Millwork shows up in so many different ways in a commercial space.

For this café, we used it throughout—from the commercial-grade cabinetry behind the counter, to floating shelves with integrated lighting, wood slat accents, and the finished panel at the front of the café bar.

Some pieces are there to work hard every day, others add warmth and detail to the space—and some do both.
A little look at a few different millwork applications and how they came together on this project.

BIM | 02 Light Industrial
A little behind the scenes of a new-build light industrial project — and some of the specialties that go into this construction type.

PEMB + Structural — The primary structure is a pre-engineered metal building (PEMB), engineered and fabricated specifically for the project.

MEP — Especially important here because the building combines office space + an automotive shop. HVAC, electrical, plumbing, equipment and the different needs of each space all have to be coordinated within one building.

Architectural — Bringing it all together through layout, exterior design, code + life safety, openings, and coordination between each system.
Different specialties, one coordinated building. That’s the BIM part.

A space taking shape.

Each rendering brings this organic Mediterranean-inspired café one step closer to reality. Construction documents are well underway, and it’s exciting to see the design continue to evolve with each phase.

MPD Material Library | Modern Grayge

Commercial interiors have leaned heavily toward cool grays over the last several years. We’re seeing a shift toward warmer, layered palettes that still feel clean, modern, and timeless.

This selection blends gray-beige tones with warm wood, terrazzo, textured stone, and subtle black accents to introduce timeless warmth without feeling cold.

Lighting is one of the most overlooked elements in commercial design - but it’s often what makes a space feel complete.

The best interiors don’t rely on a single type of lighting. They layer three different types together:
• Ambient Lighting creates comfort and sets the overall mood.
• Task Lighting helps people work, shop, dine, or interact with your space comfortably.
• Accent Lighting guides the eye to the features that make your business unique.

When one of these layers is missing, people often can’t explain why a space feels ‘off’ - they just know something doesn’t feel quite right. Thoughtful lighting isn’t just about visibility. It’s about creating a space that’s functional, welcoming, and memorable.

Behind the scenes of a recent commercial site visit at Sydel Coffee - currently under construction in the new Woodstock Mill District in Downtown. Our team met on site to review progress and ensure every detail continues to translate from design intent through the construction process.
