Here's a little update on the new jewelry box build. This project starts with three pieces of highly figured maple with some nice spalting. Since the boards needed to be jointed and cut to size, I hand-jointed them with a Stanley No.7 jointer plane to avoid tear out from a powered jointer. After that, I squared the ends on the table saw. Then two of the three boards were planed to 5/8 inch thickness with the benchtop planer and cut into usable rectangles. These two pieces will become the top and bottom of the jewelry box. The third piece may be used for accents or other parts of the box later on. What do you think of the grain in these pieces?

Here is what awaits you all for the next build. This table top jewelry box armoire is going to be a head turner. Using highly figured quilted maple with some spalting lines, stabilized maple burl blocks that will be resawn for 5 or 6 drawer fronts. And some Pomelle Sapele. There is lots of warm colors in this combination of woods. I think it's going to turn out beautifully. I cant wait to start working on this one.

My latest commission project is officially finished.

This box is constructed out of beautiful dark purple heart wood for the box with small sections of it having curly grain (mostly in the face side) the details in that wood really show when the sunlight hits the grain at just the right angle. Its a truly beautiful piece of wood. The lid and bottom panels were constructed from stabilized elderbox burl bought from RedFalcon Woodworks, then the burl was stabilized with cactus juice resin from TurnTex, LLC to make the wood grain more durable. Both jewelry box inserts were made with minature hand cut purpleheart dovetails. The bottom panels for those inserts were made with nice maple wood showing ray flecking in the grain. This customer wanted their nieces name engraved into the wood as well as a a personal message. The engravings were made using my small handheld Laser Pe**er 2 laser engraver.

This will be delivered to the customer tomorrow.
Enjoy the finished pictures! 😉

I made a lot of progress this past weekend on the purple heart elderbox burl jewelry box. Finishing off both the necklace and ring/earing compartment inserts.

Still have the sanding and finish to apply but at this point this box is nearly done. And will be ready for the customer next weekend. Will post finshed pictures later in the week.

Some of this weekend's progress on the purpleheart elderbox burl jewelry box. I managed to get the entire assembly and glue up done, and lid separated from the main box body. I also mortised the spaces for the brass hinges, put in rare earth magnets to hold the lid shut and added in a single dovetail handle to the lid made out of matching elder box burl to give it a nice contrast. And added a few dividers for the bottom most layer to match the bottom burl panel.

I still need to build 2 more jewelry box inserts that will be removable and sit on the inner lips that i dado'd into the 4 walls of the box. Those layers will have minature dovetails holding the inserts together. That will be a project for next weekend though.

This is definitely gonna be a pretty box when it's done.Purpleheart and stabilized elderbox burl.

Look at this beauty. This is one of many chunks of elder box burl that I have on the shelf that I recently purchased from RedFalcon Woodworks. This piece just got stabilized yesterday with Cactus Juice resin and will be getting resawed for my latest commission jewelry box. This is eventually going to turn into a beautiful lid and bottom for a purple heart box. 💜

Now that I have given my friend this birthday present I can finally post about it. I wanted to share this lovely box i made for a coworker of mine using wood i got from DeadwoodSawmill . The top piece was made from one of many pieces of maple burl that I got as a package deal of multiple maple burl chunks of various sizes, some with more figure, some with spalting. I stabilized the burl pieces using a darker tinted cactus juice resin then resawed to butterfly twice for a threeway bookmatch lid. One of those uploaded pictures shows about â…” of those stabilized maple burl pieces. The rest that aren't pictured are the spalted pieces which I plan to do a double dye resin for other projects.

The sides and bottom were all made from an extremely warped but highly figured (quilted) maple. You can clearly see in the before pix how bad the bow, cupping, & twisting was.

This project was made to replace a coworkers surgical loupes (magnifier glasses for the operating room). I noticed his box was all scratched up, banged up, dented and made of the cheap ¼" plywood with stain that comes with the surgical loupes when purchased. After 20+ years of use that box has seen its fair share of abuse. So, as a suprise, I decided to make him a box using the exact dimensions of his current box using more durable and much nicer hardwoods and actual dovetail jointery to hold the entire construction together rather than the box joints the original has. And actually using dado grooves to hold the lid and bottom panels in place, not just being glued on to save cost like the original. Everything on this box was made with quality and nicer joints that looks much fancier & pleasing to the eye.. He loved it!

I do plan to make more of these boxes in case others are interested in purchasing. Send me a DM and we will talk about price, dimensions, wood choice, custom boxes for headlamp/loupe set up if that is what you'd like.
