Ox & Mule : Mustards

Hesperis matronalis is the flowering expression of the mustard family—a link to cabbage, kale, and radish that traded harvest for beauty.

In the vegetable garden, it serves as atmosphere.

The vegetables provide substance: the broad leaves of kale, the blue-green weight of cabbage, the upright blades of onion.

Hesperis rises above them in a haze of lavender bloom, softening rows into a landscape. It brings height without heaviness, movement without disorder, and turns a productive garden into something that feels inhabited rather than cultivated.

Where the vegetables provide abundance, *Hesperis* provides grace.

Ox & Mule: Plant Varietals.
Alliums (ornamental onions)

Botanical taxonomy

Family: Amaryllidaceae
Genus: Allium
Species: Numerous ornamental species including Allium giganteum, Allium christophii, and Allium sphaerocephalon.

Hardiness / temperature range

Typically hardy in USDA Zones 4–8 depending on species.

Tolerates roughly:

Winter lows near −30°F
Summer temperatures above 90°F once established
Prefers well-drained soil and full sun

Compositional expression

The flowering heads create a strong geometric presence through their nearly perfect spherical form. Unlike plants that rely on massed foliage, alliums function as points, markers, and visual punctuation within a composition.

Their expression comes from:

suspended globes of flowers
clear architectural geometry
vertical stems with minimal visual weight
rhythmic repetition when planted in groups
transparency that allows views through the planting

They read more as:

architectural
formal
sculptural
rhythmic
contemporary

rather than lush, or heavily naturalistic.

In landscape composition, alliums function almost like visual notes held above the planting layer. They create moments of emphasis without adding visual heaviness, allowing them to connect low perennials, grasses, and shrubs while preserving openness and movement throughout the garden. They are particularly effective when repeated in drifts, where the spherical flower heads establish rhythm and spatial coherence across the planting.
