🌀🏠 At Roof Top Experts, we understand the importance of choosing the right roofing material, especially in hurricane-prone areas. Let's break down the differences between shingles, metal, and tile to see how they stack up against the forces of hurricanes.
Shingles are perhaps the most common roofing material, known for their affordability and variety of styles. During hurricanes, shingles can easily be torn off by strong winds, leading to roof damage and potential leaks. Shingles are often the most budget-friendly option, and easier to replace after storms. Shingles can withstand up to a category 3 from our experience, however many factors play in. The type of shingles, how they were installed, and age are the main contributing factors.
Metal roofing has gained popularity recently due to its durability and longevity. Panels made of steel, aluminum, or copper, metal roofs offer excellent protection against extreme weather conditions, including hurricanes. Metal roofs tend to have a higher cost compared to shingles making it unfavorable to install. Metal roofs can withstand up to a category 4. Like shingles, this comes down to the installment and thickness of the metal and decking.
Tile roofing is known for its timeless aesthetic and durability. With proper maintenance, tile roofs can last 50 years or more. With the proper installment, tiles can withstand up to Category 5 hurricanes! We see high wind rating on properly adhered tiles, with two-part setting adhesives instead of screws. Tile comes with a hefty price tag, one of the most expensive roofing system. Material lead time can be over 5 months, so delays are to be expected.
Metal roofing emerges as the winner, offering superior durability and resilience against high winds and flying debris. Tile roofing follows closely behind, providing excellent protection but at a higher cost. Shingles, while affordable, are more vulnerable to hurricane damage and may require more frequent repairs or replacements in storm-prone areas. Ultimately, the choice of roofing material depends on various factors, including budget, aesthetics, and local weather conditions.

🌀🏠 Is your home ready for hurricane season? Don't take chances with your home's safety - trust Roof Top Experts to be your hurricane-preparedness partner! Taking a proactive approach to the increasingly challenging climate landscape today can make a difference in how people can recover tomorrow. Here are detailed steps that incorporates preparations and considerations:

Get educated, Get Informed: Stay tuned to local weather forecasts and heed any warnings or advisories issued by authorities. Know your zone, community disaster plans, and community warning systems. Know the specific hazards that threaten your community (hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, etc.) and what your evacuation routes are.

Prepare a plan for your family and pets: Either decide if you can stay home to bunker down or need to evacuate. Include items for your pets in your emergency kit, NEVER leave your pets behind. Stock to include nonperishable food, water, batteries, and medications. Have a first aid kit handy.

Safety devices and utilities: Be sure you know where your fire extinguishers are located. Know how and when to turn off water, gas, and electricity at the main switches and valves. Turn off utilities only if you suspect lines are damaged or if local officials instruct you to do so.

Inspect Your Roof: Your roof is your first line of defense against the storm. Schedule a professional inspection with Roof Top Experts to identify any weaknesses or damage. From loose shingles to compromised flashing, addressing these issues now can prevent costly repairs later. Know your home’s ability to withstand hurricane-force winds. See our Home Checklist to ensure your home is ready.

Important Records and Documents: Keep copies of important family records and other documents (birth and marriage certificates, Social Security cards, passports, wills, deeds, financial, insurance, medical/immunization records) in a safe deposit box or other safe location.

Don't wait until it's too late! Contact Roof Top Expert today to schedule your free roof inspection and get a free 2024 Florida Hurricane Guide copy.

🌀🏠 NOAA predicts an above-normal 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. With a whopping 85% chance of an above normal season, hurricane prone areas are warned to be prepared for this year’s hurricane season. Don't gamble the odds with your home's safety this hurricane season. Choose Roof Top Experts for peace of mind and unparalleled service. Contact us today to schedule your consultation! 🌀🏠

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has forecasted a range of 17 to 25 total named storms. Of the forecasted named storms, 8 to 13 are forecasted to become hurricanes. This includes 4 to 7 becoming major hurricanes (Category 3,4,5). NOAA has 70% confidence in the predicted ranges.

Tropical storm formations will have favorable conditions with the near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic and development of La Nina conditions in the Pacific. La Nina has begun to affect trade winds and will decrease wind shear, allowing hurricanes to hold their column structure better. The key this year is to be prepared. Don't wait until the winds howl and the skies darken—act now to ensure your property is hurricane-ready!

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale estimates potential property damage based on a scale of 1 through 5, 5 being the most damaging. The Saffir – Simpson Scale does not account for other potential deadly hazards, such as storm surges and flooding.

Category 1 : Very dangerous winds will produce some damage: Well-constructed frame homes could have damage to roof, shingles, vinyl siding and gutters. Large branches of trees will snap and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled.

Category 2: Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage: Well-constructed frame homes could sustain major roof and siding damage. Many shallowly rooted trees will be snapped or uprooted and block numerous roads. Near-total power loss is expected with outages that could last from several days to weeks.

Category 3: Devastating damage will occur: Well-built framed homes may incur major damage or removal of roof decking and gable ends. Many trees will be snapped or uprooted, blocking numerous roads. Electricity and water will be unavailable for several days to weeks after the storm passes.

Category 4: Catastrophic damage will occur: Well-built framed homes can sustain severe damage with loss of most of the roof structure and/or some exterior walls. Most trees will be snapped or uprooted and power poles downed. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.

Category 5: Catastrophic damage will occur: A high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last for weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.
