This deck builder did the customer a “favor” by re-routing the boiler venting himself rather then calling a professional.

What you can’t see in the photo is that the exhaust is just sitting on the ground, covered in leaves and debris. The fittings on the inside have come apart, as a result.

It quite possibly could have killed this family with carbon monoxide poisoning. They ended up calling the fire dept at 2:30am because they had high co levels on the second floor of their home.

Let this be a reminder for you to buy a co detector today. And plug it in somewhere near your bedroom. Low.

Hi, it’s me again.

Making sure to remind you all that if you have a condensing gas boiler/furnace that is vented out the side wall. You NEED to make sure your exhaust and intake are CLEAR of snow and ice. Do not assume.

ITS GOING TO BE COLD.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FUEL. AGAIN - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FUEL, go look at the gauge.

MAKE SURE ALLLLLL OF YOUR HEATING ZONES ARE WORKING TODAY - BEFORE THE COLD SNAP.

I WOULD RECOMMEND TURNING YOUR THERMOSTATS UP 3-5 DEGREES WARMER TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN COMFORTABLE AND UNCOMFORTABLE.

REMINDER - many homes are not designed to heat to its full potential when the temperature drops below zero.

If your baseboards are hot, your heat is working. If your registers are blowing hot air, your heat is working. Your thermostats may not satisfy until it warms up.

This seems obvious - but every year we get a call for a situation similar - MAKE SURE YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE SHUT ALL THE WAY.
IF YOU HAVE AC’s IN YOUR WINDOWS STILL - ITS SAFE TO TAKE THEM OUT - you won’t need them anytime soon.

IN THIS WEATHER - it is not advised to heat your home solely with your heat pump. It is best, and safest to use your primary/central heating system.

IF YOU SUPPLEMENT WITH A PELLET STOVE/ELECTRIC SPACE HEATER/WOODSTOVE/anything else I can’t think of right now. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU RUN YOUR THERMOSTAT CONTROLLED HEAT AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN - ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A BOILER/FORCED HOT WATER BASEBOARD. THIS WILL HELP PREVENT YOUR PIPES FROM FREEZING.

IT IS ALSO ADVISED TO HAVE YOUR FAUCETS DRIP TO PREVENT DOMESTIC FROZEN PIPES.

IF YOU HAVE MORE THEN ONE PROPERTY, OR RENTAL PROPERTYS. I WOULD SUGGEST CHECKING ON THEM MORNING AND NIGHT - it will not take long to create bigger then normal issues.

IF IT FEELS LIKE IM YELLING, ITS BECAUSE I AM. DON’T GET STUCK IN THE COLD. IT SUCKS.

We are aware of how scary the news has been with how many homes have been destroyed lately from unsafe home heating situations. And unfortunately too many deaths as well.

This is an incredibly easy way to make sure your home is MORE safe. Plugs right into the wall and could save a life.

We always recommend having carbon monoxide detectors low, and and in bedrooms as well as living areas.

Superior Plus Propane closes all local offices in Maine, NH; still delivering fuel

With the freezing temperatures, and heaters on high, a company that delivers heating oil and propane has now closed all its local offices in Maine.

THIS is why it is important to hire a company that will pull the burner and inspect the condition of a heat exchanger during the Annual Service of a Miller Mobile Home Furnace.
This was a long time ago, but this customer didn’t call because of an issue, or an odor. It was just a routine annual service.
The system had been “maintained” for years, but clearly not properly.
The combustion chamber had cracked, failed. And then the burner began to burn a hole thru the back of the furnace.
Their bedroom was on the other side of this wall. A couple more days and I’m not sure the home would’ve been there.
