Subject: Triple Zero Plus - 7.9.2025 - Showing Up Was Only the Start -or- It's Not How You Start It's How You Finish
To: Chip Ward
Out of town readers please bear with me and enjoy a story of a job well done. This mornings newsletter is a shout-out to a company that came through in the clutch, and was truly first rate in all applicable categories. That company in Chesapeake Tree Service.
We had a tree come down in the front yard a few days before the 4th of July. More accurately half a tree. It landed in an area where my neighbor usually parks his car. Fortunately, his car was gone at crunch time. So, while things could have been much worse, having half a tree come down in your yard can still ruin the whole darn day. Two neighbors came over immediately and pitched in. We cut up what we could but it was clear from the git that I would need to call in a pro. Fortunately our daughter and her husband had used Chesapeake Tree Service in the past. Beth Anne gave me the number to call and Keith picked up on two rings. Keith owns the company.
Keith came by and gave me a quote to take down what remained of the tree, grind the stump, remove the fallen tree trunk from my neighbors parking place, remove all the branches we had pilied 7 feet in our yard, and clean up any remaining debris. All for a price that got two thumbs up from me and the missus. (I'll get in trouble for that line!) Keith had equipment in the area and promised to do the job the next day.
Well, you know what Woody Allen said, "90% of life is just showing up". There was some concern on my part that given the approaching holiday there might be a change in plans. I need not have worried.
At 1:30 the next day 5 guys and 4 pieces of equipment rolled up and got to it. By 2:30 they were gone. In that hour we were treated to a 5 man crew operating like the proverbial 'well oiled machine'. A Jerr-Dan vehicle rolled off a forklift type device with opposing pincers that looked like a huge insect from a Hollywood lot. This machine fed a mulcher that easily swallowed and disgorged 2.5 foot around, 6 foot log sections that the guys had cut up with chain saws. The 7 foot pile of branches went into the mulcher in three bites. Then the stump grinder made short work of what remained.
As impressive as all that was, it was not what impressed me most. The most impressive part of the entire job reminded me of another quote. "It's not how you start, it is how you finish". When the trucks roared off to the next job, our yard looked like I had called a lawn service rather than a tree removal company. Nothing of the tree problem remained. Not even a twig. The hole in the yard where the stump had been was a perfect rectangle ready for seed or sod. It was truly as if the tree fall had never happened. The bottom line is this. If a tree falls in the forest, who cares, nobody can see. But if a tree falls in your yard, call Chesapeake Tree! Have a Wonderful Wednesday
