Doesn’t everyone need a box for their stuff? Here, Josiah and Sam are milling walnut and rift-cut red oak to make dovetail boxes. Hey, where else would you want to put your pocket change and oddments from your travels?
Here Josiah and Sam are learning the basic types of finishing conditions: spot (where screws or nails are), corners, flats and patches. There is much I can teach them, but what it really comes down to is practice and experience- oh, and you have to know when to just walk away and stop fussing with it.
Sam and Josiah getting the “hang” of installing drywall. And for you sharp-eyed folks out there, yes, there are two holes that appear to be mis-cuts. Not so. We’ll be using these later to learn how to make a proper patch.
Ah drywall. That most under-appreciated trade. These young fellows got to learn a little about hanging and finishing drywall today.
But first, and most importantly, we talked about proper material handling. These guys have wonderful developing muscles and they will likely be carrying heavy loads throughout their lives so I strongly urge them to pace themselves, and to learn how to use leverage when handling materials. Probably could have used that advice myself many years ago.
These two fine young fellas are learning how to frame by building stick-built models. Every stud, every joist and rafter you would find in most any house they are constructing in these models.
I love it when, after decades of working in the carpentry trades, I learn something new.
Was talking with my friend, John Kelly, the other day. He saw me wearing this great shirt my student, Jane Heaney gave me. “Where Are My Fingers?” is the first rule here at Show Me How.
John was telling me how whenever he uses a power tool such as a miter saw, he shakes his fingers so he knows exactly where they are. Great tip John!
Had a great day with Mr. Pete Hobbie. Took my student, Sam, on a field trip so Pete could show us how to carve spoons.
