Marble chevron backsplash in Wi******er, MA.
This was part of a full kitchen remodel. We handled the tile: a tight-joint marble chevron mosaic running the whole length of the kitchen, behind the range, under the upper cabinets and around the window over the sink. The homeowner picked a polished mix of Thassos, Carrara and blue-grey marble from Garden State Tile.
Tight-joint means there is no grout line between the pieces. That takes away the small margin of error a normal mosaic gives you. Every sheet has to land exactly where the last one ended, and if one row drifts, the whole wall shows it. On polished white marble in a bright kitchen, there is nowhere to hide that.
We centered the layout on the range, kept the cuts out at the corners and edges, and checked every single row against a laser. The window was the hardest part. A laser on a pole carried the same line across the opening so the pattern came back down the other side still in line with the rest of the wall.
A second wall in the same kitchen got a different look: an Ann Sacks Savoy Arrowhead mosaic, a glazed ceramic in a kite and triangle pattern, behind floating oak shelves with lighting built in. The glaze pools at the edge of each piece, so the wall catches light differently from every angle. It ties in with the chevron through the same white oak and the same clean lines.
Against the white cabinets, white oak island and shiplap hood, it reads modern and classic at the same time. The kind of kitchen that will still look right in twenty years.
