So inspired by a visit today to the We Got This Milwaukee Open House, as part of the Open Doors Milwaukee event. For over 12 years this community-based organization has been offering opportunities to at-risk teens in Milwaukee's 53206 zip code, one of the most economically challenged areas in the state of Wisconsin. Every Saturday morning during the growing season neighborhood youth plant and maintain 15 community gardens, each located on formerly empty lots. Most Saturdays there are over 150 kids participating! Young people are paid $20 for working in the gardens from 8:00am until noon. They learn gardening skills, but more importantly they develop a sense of pride in their community while also providing fresh, healthy food in what is otherwise an urban food desert.
Their motto is : Recreating neighborhoods by putting the "neighbor" back in the "hood".
