FAQ: Can you tell if something is asbestos just by looking?
Asbestos can only be seen under a microscope.
Some materials may raise a red flag because of their age, texture, location, or use. But visual clues are not the same as lab results.
Something can look suspicious and still test negative. Something can also look ordinary and test positive.
That is why testing matters before materials are disturbed, especially during renovation, demolition, flooring removal, wall cuts, or repairs after water damage.
If you are not sure what a material is, do not guess based on appearance.
Test it. Document it. Then decide what happens next.
