Your garlic is harvested and dried…now what?

Time to store!

We like to separate our garlic into three different categories:

🧄 eat now - any bulbs that have imperfections, slight damage or cloves are small. Bulbs that split open or got nicked while harvesting are still perfectly fine to eat, they just won’t last long in storage.

🧄 storage - flawless, medium to large size bulbs…if cured correctly these bulbs can last 6-8 months stored in a cool dry place.

🧄 seed garlic - the biggest, most beautiful bulbs for fall planting!

EEK!! 🐛 Be on the lookout for hornworms!

Hornworms are extremely destructive and can chow down your plants over night!

They are tricky to locate as they blend in with the tomato plants. Look for:

🐛 Branches completely striped of foliage.
🐛 Green/brown/black p**p that looks similar to a whole peppercorn.

If you spot any of those signs, the hornworm is near.

Another great way to find them is at night with a black light flash light. They stick out like a beacon!

A good indication is when the leaves tip over. They bend at a 90 degree angle just above the bulb.

Keep in mind they might not all be ready at once. We pick as needed until the entire patch is harvested.

Hey gardeners! 👋

Hope everyone got rain today! 🌧️

If you did, you might consider picking any tomatoes that are ripe or starting to ripen. Tomatoes suck up water fast and can cause the skins to split. Set them on the counter inside and let them ripen before enjoying! 🍅🍅🍅

We picked a nice variety tonight to finish ripening inside…Romas, Amish gold slicer, wis 55, sunny boy, Cherokee purple, cherry and grapes. A few split open so we will be enjoying those sooner than later!

✨GARLIC UPDATE✨

Garlic leaves are looking dry and bulbs are starting to appear “papery”. I am going to let it dry for about 7-10 more days. Garlic needs to be totally dry, like crunchy dry before preparing it for storage. Patience is key when it comes to curing your garlic harvest for extended storage length.
