It’s taken a lot longer than I intended but the first grafted apple seedlings are laid out to be planted in the first trial rows. Working a full time job has meant the apple breeding project only gets worked on evenings and weekends.

Hundreds of apple seedlings have lived patiently in pots up to 4 years which is way too long. While many of them will not be planted, they can’t grow well and fruit until they are in the ground. It’s a very rewarding feeling to know that some of these are very soon going to be planted. Here are photos of just a few going into the ground, both open pollinated and purposeful crosses I did. Descriptions under the photos.

One of the interesting projects in the orchard is trying to grow recently rediscovered apple cultivars from The Lost Apple Project that I think may have a chance to grow and ripen here. There are three being trialed, Sary Sinap, Polly Bemis, and Eper. All three recently rediscovered in the Pacific Northwest.

Sary Sinap is already growing in the orchard having gone through 2 winters and doing very well. I’m optimistic the other two will do well and look forward to getting them in the ground soon so they can take off. Descriptions under the photos.
