Digging into a Georgetown rear yard this week for a new plunge pool installation, our team uncovered a small piece of the neighborhood’s past: b**r bottles dating to the early 1900s.
Among the finds were bottles from Arlington Brewing Co. of Rosslyn, VA, Chr. Heurich Brewing Co. of Washington, D.C., and Monumental Brewing Co. of Baltimore. All three were local breweries whose bottles were tossed out more than a century ago, likely before Prohibition shut their doors.
One person’s trash is another’s treasure. We’ve salvaged the bottles as witnesses to the yard’s earlier life, and we’re working out how to clean them and return them to our clients as part of their garden’s story. They might even find their way into the design itself.
Every site has a history. Sometimes you just have to dig a little to find it.
