Everybody remembers where they were when they found out.

Most of the people we lost that morning were just at work. It was a Tuesday, like any other.

Thinking about their families,
and about the ones who ran toward it.

The joke is that it's true.

Free walkthrough,
written quote,

that's everybody.

The people who hire us,
the people who hire somebody else,
and the people who just wanted to know what a number looks like before they start saving for it.

I've quoted jobs I knew I wasn't getting. Twenty-five years of watching people get a number scribbled on the back of a receipt made me a little unreasonable about this one.

Plenty of people call me for a new deck who don't need one.

If the framing underneath is still sound, we pull the old boards and reboard it.

Same structure,
same footprint,
new surface.

Cedar runs $50 a square foot that way instead of $65 for a full rebuild,
on a 300-square-foot deck that's $4,500 that stays in your pocket.

Sometimes the answer is the expensive one and I have to tell you that.

But I'd rather lose the bigger job than sell you one you didn't need.

Nobody has ever asked to see a photo of their house wrap.

They ask about the siding color. The trim.
Whether it'll look right from the road.

Fair enough, that's the part you live with.

But this gold layer is HydroGap,

and it's the reason the siding still looks right in fifteen years.

It holds a small gap behind the boards,
so water that gets in has somewhere to go and air can dry it out.

Every house on this coast takes water.
The ones that fail are the ones where it had nowhere to leave.

We flash every seam.
We wrap the windows.
We test for asbestos before anything comes off the wall.

Then we cover all of it up and you never think about it again.

That's the job. The part you can see is the easy half.

Thirty inches. Ground to the highest point of the deck.

Over that and you need a permit. Under it, usually not

Except every city on this coast adds its own rules on top of the state's, so we never rely on "usually".

I pull it,
I meet the inspector,
I handle the corrections.

You don't call the city once.

Not to ask a question,
not to schedule,
not to argue about it.

Ten years from now when you're selling and the buyer's agent asks whether the deck was permitted,
that's the part that's still true.

Storm damage is the one thing that can't wait for somebody to call you back.

A tree comes down and takes half the deck with it.

Now there's weather getting into the side of your house and you're leaving voicemails for four contractors who might get back to you Thursday.

We answer Monday through Friday, 8 to 3.
If we can't get to it, you'll know that same day and I'll tell you who to call instead.

That's not a policy.
It's two people and a phone.
