Thinking about building a shop or barndominium on your land? Look at the first photo, not the second --

Anyone can make a finished building look good (stucco and stone hide almost everything.) What you're looking for is what's underneath: sheathing with taped seams so weather can't get into the wall assembly, framing that's braced correctly, a foundation sized for the soil it's sitting on, and the covered porch framed in as part of the structure instead of tacked onto the side later.

When you're comparing bids on a metal building or shop, ask what's in the wall. If the answer is vague, that's your answer.

EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE AN OWNER UNTIL IT’S TIME TO DO OWNER DO!

Everybody wants the title. Very few people want the responsibility. Everyone wants the end results but they don’t want the years of sacrifice.

People think owning a business means freedom.

Freedom to make your own schedule. Freedom to make more money. Freedom to answer to no one.

The truth is almost the opposite. You’ll work more hours than you’ve ever worked in your life. You’ll make sacrifices no one will ever see.

For years you may be the lowest paid person in the room because everyone else has to eat before you do.

Every problem becomes your problem. Every mistake becomes your responsibility. Even when it wasn’t your fault.

The people closest to you won’t always understand why you’re doing what you’re doing.

They’ll wonder why you’re working another late night. Why you’re answering your phone during dinner. Why your mind never completely shuts off.

Because they see the business.

You carry the weight. You’ll celebrate everyone else’s wins while quietly absorbing your own losses. When the company wins, everyone gets a piece of the victory.

When the company loses, you carry every ounce of the defeat.
