The origins of April Fools' Day are uncertain, but there are a few popular theories:

The Calendar Change Theory – One of the most widely accepted theories is that April Fools' Day dates back to 1582 when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as ordered by Pope Gregory XIII. Under the old Julian calendar, the new year was celebrated around April 1. However, some people either didn’t know about or refused to accept the change and continued celebrating the new year on April 1, making them the target of jokes and pranks.

Roman Festivals – Some historians believe April Fools' Day is linked to ancient Roman festivals such as Hilaria, a celebration held around the end of March where people would dress up in disguises and play pranks on one another.

Spring Mischief – Another idea is that the day is tied to the unpredictable and “foolish” nature of the spring season, when the weather can suddenly change, leading to a tradition of lighthearted trickery.

Literary References – The first known English reference to April Fools' Day appears in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (1392). In The Nun’s Priest’s Tale, a foolish rooster is tricked by a fox on “Syn March bigan thritty dayes and two” (which could be interpreted as April 1).

While its exact origins remain a mystery, April Fools' Day has evolved into a global tradition where people play practical jokes on friends, family, and even the media.
