One of the first things we noticed heading to a leak near building was an illegally installed RP (Reduced Pressure) backflow prevention assembly. These devices are designed to be installed above ground because they have a relief valve that discharges directly to the atmosphere. When an RP is installed below grade, groundwater can enter the vault, causing corrosion and potentially preventing the relief valve from operating as designed. If the relief port becomes obstructed or submerged, the assembly may not provide the protection it was engineered for. This creates the risk of pesticides, fertilizers, bacteria, or other contaminants entering the public drinking water system.
As licensed plumbers, our number one responsibility is protecting public health by safeguarding the water supply. We’ll also be contacting the local water department to determine whether this assembly was ever tested. If it had been inspected properly, it should never have passed in a below-grade installation.
Today, we removed this unsafe installation and replaced it with a brand-new RP assembly, installed correctly above grade in accordance with code and manufacturer requirements. We also relocated it to improve the overall appearance of the property. A decorative rock cover and insulated enclosure will be added to protect the assembly from the elements while maintaining proper access for annual testing and maintenance.
At the end of the day, plumbing isn’t about doing the cheapest job—it’s about doing the job the right way. Protecting the public water supply isn’t just good workmanship; it’s our responsibility as licensed plumbers.
