One question belongs in every backyard plan:

In Iowa, that means thinking about heavy rain and snowmelt.
When we walk a property, we look at the slopes and how water moves before we settle on the pool and patio layout.
The goal is to move water away from your house, your pool and the places you’ll spend time.
A beautiful patio still needs to work when the weather changes.
This fall, take photos of any spots that hold water after a rain.
Note where runoff crosses your path outside, too.
Bring those photos to your project conversation and ask:
“𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘺𝘢𝘳𝘥?”
