It's currently raining out, so I figured I'd share another story while I wait for the rain to stop. As I mentioned in a few other posts, this is my 15th year in business. This story was from my 2nd year in business.
When I was starting out, I used to mow overgrown lawns knowing how badly they damage the mower and engine. I was the new guy, so anything was better than nothing. Pretty much "I'll take what I can get".
So anyway, I pull up to the house and know her lawn was overgrown. I already stopped by a few days prior to get a quote for her, so I knew what I was getting into. I was using a Toro Timecutter zero turn, for anyone not familiar with those, it's a residential mower and NOT meant for commercial use. Again....2nd year in business so affordability was my main concern when buying equipment.
I unload my mower and begin mowing the front yard. About half way into it, I hit something, I see white dust come out of the mower chute and my eyes started burning. Confused and in pain, I walked to my truck and flushed my eyes with water. The customer came out, apparently she saw me hit it, and asked if I was OK. I said yeah, I was good, but went to go see what I hit. She then told me "It was a bag of fertilizer. I had some weeds I wanted to get rid of so I dumped the whole bag in that one spot". Yup. The. Whole. Bag. And it wasn't the smaller bag either, it was the bigger bag. Almost 40 pounds worth.
So after that, I finished the front staying away from the fertilized area, which after hitting it I noticed it completely burned out the grass, but it was hard to see because it was so overgrown. I muster on and drive to the back yard to tackle that grass next.
Towards the end of mowing the back yard, I hear a loud WHACK and out of the corner of my eye I see a silver thing fly through the air with red mist. Now what did I hit? I powered off the blades, got off the mower and went to where the silver thing was. It was a full unopened can of tomato soup.
After I finished, I loaded everything back onto my trailer, collected my money and left. I drove off confused, eyes still a little burning and my mind spinning wondering what the heck just happened.
