How well do you know your water heater anatomy?

A - Anode rod. A sacrificial metal core that corrodes before your water tank does. This prevents premature tank leaks, doubling or tripling the operational life of the water heater when maintained.

B - Heat exchanger. Transfers thermal energy from a heat source (like a gas burner) to the domestic water without letting the two substances mix.

C - Dip tube. Directs incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank so it can be heated efficiently.

D - Pressure release value. Automatically releases hot water and steam if the internal pressure or temperature in your water heater gets too high.

E - Control valve. Regulates the flow of gas to the burner and controls the water temperature.

How many times can we say "calcium" in one reel? ๐Ÿ˜‚

This water heater is a great example of why it is so important to be flushing your water heater. The calcium that can build up from frequent use wears out your water heater much faster, is harmful to your appliances, and is detrimental to the amount of hot water available to use.

Calcium deposits are amplified in Cache Valley because our water is some of the hardest water in the country. We will discuss why that is in a later video, but you can see from the water heater in the video, the amount of calcium in our water is no joke!

Ever wondered what is actually in your water heater, or how it works?

This is specifically an example of an electric water heater with a ton of calcium deposits in it. Gas powered water heaters function similarly, but have another larger tube going up the center. We will dive more into the difference of gas and electric water heaters in a later video.
