Sometimes, I just don't understand why or how people can be so mean.
As many of you already know, a crosswalk in our community was painted with rainbow colors during Pride Month. This was approved my the Eastport City Council, and done solely by volunteers in order to promote equal rights. Shortly afterwards, it was vandalized. Some crude individual spread a bucket of white paint from one end of the crosswalk, to the other. This paint stayed wet long enough for several unknowing drivers to pass through it, spreading the white paint throughout the intersection and likely splattering their own cars with it.
After seeing what had happened, I knew it couldn't/wouldn't be left as it was, possibly even just painted over as white again by the city, which would give the individual an even greater sense of accomplishment. So, as quickly as possible, I reached out to the organizer and proper channels through the city to get the permissions necessary to repaint it as it was intended. I wanted to get this fixed as quickly as possible, firstly because it was completely disrespectful, and secondly because it was just a mess. I felt as if the culprit did not deserve to have his "artwork" displayed any longer than absolutely necessary. So, after getting permission, the next day (yesterday) we went down and scraped and repainted the entire thing, free of charge.
Regardless of how you feel about the LGTBQ+ community, these types of actions are unacceptable, full stop. A lot of people gave their most precious resource, time, and money to this project out of the kindness of their heart. Not-to-mention, usually things like this have unintended consequences (i.e. getting wet paint on innocent driver's vehicles). I hope whoever did this does some soul-searching, and I wish them the best in the future.
We live in such a small, close-knit community, and in recent years I think we have all noticed it is changing - not for the better - as is the rest of the world. The only way to fix this is to take action, no matter how small. A small act of kindness goes a long ways, even just saying hello to someone on the sidewalk can change their entire day.
I want to say thank you to everyone for the incredible amount of outpouring support we have received - but really, there is no need to thank us. We were only doing what is right and we are just happy that we were able to get it cleaned up as quickly as we did! I have been asked multiple times how to donate to this project, and although I was hesitant at first, if you would like to make a donation toward the cost of materials, please reach out to me directly. Any proceeds received beyond our incurred costs will be provided to the nonprofit, EqualityMaine.
I also want to sincerely thank Sherwin-Williams in Calais for donating some of the rollers, brushes, and other tools we used for this project, Moose Island Marine for the discounting the paint, the Eastport Police Department, and the City of Eastport for allowing us to do this. Each of your contributions helped make this possible, and I truly appreciate it.
If anyone has any information on the suspect, please call the Eastport Police Department at 207-853-4353 or Eastport City Hall at 207-853-2300.
