Here's a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes at Butternut Bend. We don't just grow plants, we collect and process locally adapted seed as well!

It was a good day to harvest American plums! And a good night to process 𝑨 𝑳𝑶𝑻 of Sassafras berries! 🐿💪

You never know what you'll stumble across. Maybe a beautiful wildflower, an interesting salamander, a rare butterfly, a doe with triplet fawns... or, more chanterelles than we could carry! 🍄‍🟫👨‍🍳🍳🔥

Continuing with the Species Spotlight series, let's talk about American Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis)!

If you enjoy edible landscaping, American elderberry deserves a place in your yard.

Large clusters of creamy white flowers appear in early summer, attracting an impressive variety of pollinators. By late summer, those flowers give way to heavy clusters of deep purple-black berries prized for syrups, jams, wines, and countless homemade recipes.

Wildlife loves elderberry just as much as people do. Birds, native bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects all benefit from having elderberry nearby.

Steve's tips: The berries should always be cooked before eating. Fortunately, they happen to make excellent preserves, syrups, and desserts, and the flowers can be used to make elderflower cordial, for refreshing summer cocktails!

Elderberry is partially self-fertile, so while a single plant will produce some fruit, having two or more plants increases yield for the group!

Just to give everyone an idea of what’s coming, here's a tentative availability list for next spring. These will be mostly bare-root, first-year seedlings. 🌱

Mother nature can still throw some monkey wrenches at us (⚡🔥🌪️🐛🦌🐰), so we don’t know exact quantities or sizes yet, but this is what we expect to have by next spring.

We've also included the list of seed we collect, so you can see the species we're able to grow or source. Let us know if you have any requests! 🌰🐿🪏

This week's Species Spotlight: American Plum (Prunus americana)

If you're looking for a shrub that earns its keep, American plum is hard to beat.

In spring, its branches are covered in fragrant white blossoms that are a welcome sight for pollinators. By late summer, those flowers have become tart-to-sweet plums that make excellent jams, jellies, sauces, and wildlife food.

American plum naturally forms dense thickets, making it an outstanding choice for windbreaks, privacy screens, erosion control, and wildlife habitat. Birds nest in its branches, pollinators flock to its flowers, and countless mammals enjoy the fruit.

Steve's tip: Don't be surprised if it sends up root suckers. That's part of its strategy! If you're planting for wildlife or a natural hedge, let it spread. If you'd prefer a single specimen, simply remove any shoots that pop up where you don't want them.

Hello! We’ve gone a little nuts and started a bare-root tree nursery!

Butternut Bend grows bare-root stock for edible landscaping, wildlife plantings, shade trees, and more.

We'll be taking pre-orders soon for next spring, but in the meantime, we have a limited selection of potted stock remaining from last year’s production that we’d like to see go to good homes.

Here’s our current inventory and pricing. Pickup in Uniontown by appointment only.
