🍂🐝 “What's the benefit of treating my home in the fall?”
Richie gets this question a LOT this time of year.

Take a look at this home in Barnstead, NH. You can see wasp activity around several areas of the structure—and there's a reason they're suddenly so interested.

The seasons are changing, and insects know it.

As nights get colder, many insects begin seeking protected places where they can overwinter. On sunny fall days, areas like soffit boxes, siding and other protected parts of your home can warm up and retain heat, making them attractive places for insects to investigate.

Wasps aren't the only ones. Other overwintering insects, including western conifer seed beetles, can start making their way toward homes as temperatures change.

That's one reason fall pest control isn't something to overlook just because summer is over.
This is a great time to inspect your property, look for pest activity, identify vulnerable entry areas, and address problems before pests settle into protected spaces for the colder months.

As Richie always says, understanding why something is happening is a big part of solving it.

🐭 Protecting your home from rodents starts with understanding the problem.

You don't need to know whether you need traps, exclusion work, a treatment plan—or anything at all—before you call 7E.
That's Richie's job.

Rodent problems aren't one-size-fits-all. The first step is understanding what you're seeing, where the activity is happening, and how mice or rats may be getting into your home.

Sometimes that means looking for tiny gaps around the foundation. Sometimes it's a worn garage door seal, an opening around a utility line, or evidence of gnawing that points us in the right direction.

And sometimes? You just need some advice.

That's why Richie is happy to start with a free educational call. Tell him what you're seeing, ask your questions, and he'll help you understand what your next step should be.

No guessing. No automatically selling you a service you may not need. Education first. Solutions second.

🐝 Richie almost lost his life today.
A wasp almost stung him in the arm.
Dear Lord baby Jesus... it would have been all over. 😂

Now that we've acknowledged Richie's incredible act of bravery, there's actually a really cool pest lesson happening in this video.

Richie took an emergency call up in the Bartlett/Jackson area for an active wasp nest established inside a wall void.

After treating the nest area, he stuck around—and within about 15 minutes, the temperature started dropping as the sun moved behind the mountains.

That's when you could really see the returning activity.
🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

Wasps that had been away from the nest began coming back within a relatively short window. That's something homeowners don't always consider when looking at an active nest: the insects you see coming and going at that moment may not represent the entire colony.

Foraging wasps can still be away from the nest and return after treatment or disturbance—which is one of the reasons Richie considers nest location, activity, temperature, time of day and pest behavior when deciding how to approach a problem.

Especially this time of year, cooler nights followed by warmer daytime temperatures can make for some interesting activity.

And returning to a disturbed nest apparently makes for some very frustrated wasps. 😬

If you've got wasps disappearing into your siding, soffit, wall, or another opening around the house, don't assume the visible activity tells the whole story.

🐭 Richie’s calling it now: we could be in for a BUSY rodent season.

Cooler nights are here, food sources are abundant, and mice and rats are going to start looking for places that offer warmth, food and shelter.

And your house may be sending out more invitations than you realize.

One of the coolest things Richie explains in this video is how rodents actually navigate their environment. Their whiskers—or vibrissae—are highly sensitive sensory tools that help them understand the spaces around them. Combine that with their strong sense of smell and ability to detect environmental cues, and they're remarkably good at locating potential shelter.

That means it's time to start looking at your house the way a mouse might.

Check your garage door seals, foundation, dryer vents, windows, screens, doors and utility penetrations. Look for small gaps, gnawing, damaged materials or areas where light is coming through.

Because once rodents find a reliable way inside, a small problem can become a much bigger one.
And that's why Richie spends so much time educating homeowners. Sometimes you need service. Sometimes you just need someone to answer a question and point you in the right direction.

Education. Safety. Prevention. That's ESP, and it's what 7E was built around.

🍂🐜 “It’s getting cold. The bugs are probably gone.”
Not so fast.

We're still seeing insect activity across New Hampshire, and depending on the weather, there can be several more weeks of activity ahead.

But here's the bigger reason Richie doesn't want homeowners ignoring fall pest problems:
Where do you think some of those insects go when it gets cold?

Many insects seek protected areas to overwinter. Depending on the species, they can enter diapause—a period of reduced development and activity that helps them survive unfavorable conditions.
And your home's cracks, gaps, siding, wall voids and other protected spaces can make pretty appealing shelter.

That's why putting off a pest problem because “winter will take care of it” isn't always the best strategy.
Fall is a great time to address existing activity, inspect potential entry points and think ahead to next spring.

As Richie says: fall treatments can be just as important as spring treatments.

🐭 Think you’d know if mice were getting into your house? You might be surprised.

When Richie does a rodent inspection, he’s not just looking for signs of mice—he’s trying to answer the bigger question:

How are they getting in?

Take a walk around your own home and look closely. Small gaps around doors, foundations, siding and utility penetrations can be enough. Look for gnaw marks, chewed materials, droppings and other signs of activity.

And here’s an easy one 👉 turn off the lights.

If you see daylight streaming through around a door or other area that should be sealed, that's a gap worth investigating.

Catching the mouse is one thing. Finding and addressing how it got inside is what helps prevent the problem from continuing.

Not sure where to start? That's what we're here for.

And as for those hornets? Apparently they didn’t know what hit them. 😂

🐭 What happens when rodents are burrowing under your steps—but you don't want rodenticides used on your property?

You find another solution.

Rodents have been getting underneath the front steps, so we're installing Dig Defence approximately a foot into the ground to create a physical barrier against continued burrowing.

And Richie isn't going to sugarcoat it: this is a labor-intensive fix. 😂

But it's also a great real-world example of Integrated Pest Management.

Pest management doesn't have to mean doing the exact same treatment at every house. We look at how they're getting in, what conditions are contributing to the problem, what the homeowner is comfortable with, and what alternatives make sense for the property.

Sometimes the answer is treatment. Sometimes it's exclusion and physical barriers. Often, it's a combination of strategies.

That's why we inspect first and build the plan from there.

🐜 “I would say that's a direct hit.”

Yeah, Richie... we think so too. 😂

HUNDREDS of carpenter ants started pouring out of this shed once the nest was directly targeted—coming out of the beams, falling from above, and apparently trying to hitch a ride home on Richie.

This is exactly why we talk so much about finding the source instead of simply treating the ants you see.

A few ants walking around can lead to a whole lot more activity hidden inside a structure.

If you're seeing recurring carpenter ants around your home, garage, shed, or other structure, let's figure out where they're actually coming from.
