I’m officially retired from the business of landscape design and building. Thank you to all who trusted me to tear up your yards, and hopefully co-create something more beautiful.

I’m no longer looking for work, just growing stuff for us and the critters, observing, interacting, enjoying life and nurturing a few plants we love.

You can still get in touch with me through my personal website:

I changed my business profile and cover photos to reflect the direction I'm going. I'm no longer looking for work, just growing stuff for us and the critters, observing, interacting, enjoying life and nurturing a few plants we love. We've entered a new phase of life.

So I'll just use this page to post some permaculture garden related ideas. Most of the pictures will be from our own yard.

Experiment #29617:
Bright red painted strawberry sized rocks, scattered in our strawberry bed a couple of weeks before the real strawberries appear.
I read somewhere that birds and squirrels try to eat the rocks and get turned off.
It seems to be working: we haven’t seen any bird bites this year and we’re getting fully ripe berries!

Having a place to start your own plants from seed is a good thing. More important than saving you money, you connect with and care more for them. It brings more joy to your world.

And sometimes the way they grow surprises you. These orange morning glories came up quickly but have stayed like this for two weeks, just one secondary leaf each!

It’s important to observe and interact with your place. We bought 3 flame azaleas and felt they would grow better and show off their spectacular color if they had a bit of direct sun.

So I moved around 3 stakes (with orange flags) in the back yard over several days to find the spots which felt “just right”. One factor is that we can see them all from the patio chairs.

I needed more good soil for a sunny bed in the front, so I’m excavating a path and sifting out the roots and rocks while claiming some space from the forest uphill. That path above the bed will be layered with cardboard and filled with wood chips. Sometimes you can add great value to an area by just rearranging logs, rocks, soil, mulch, etc., and planting things where they want to grow.

I finally got my “last” bed built for this year’s garden. The soil is not mature yet but I added some microbes and some organic material. Patience… the first year of a new bed (which should mostly be actual dirt) is all about incubation of soil life, so I’ll probably plant some annual legumes and annual grass to build soil structures

I’d like to offer a free service this fall to anyone in and around Travelers Rest, SC. I call it a “walkabout” where we walk around your property and discuss the opportunities (and problems). I’m a good listener, and you might get some great ideas.

My customers are local home owners who want to transform their yards to something more eco-friendly, and food producing with less work, but are not sure where to start.

For interest, here’s a picture of a female Eastern Towhee foraging for seeds and bugs under some leaf litter. These are fascinating creatures to watch. Attracting wildlife to your yard is easy and interesting. You'll also have more amazingly diverse insects and tiny critters which will live on your native plants (a good thing) and build soil. All this wildlife needs food, water and shelter, just like you!

My gardening style is “messy”, simple and fun. Below is a link to an excellent article about the many benefits of “leaving your leaves” this fall.

I have a few inoculated Shiitake mushroom logs for sale in Travelers Rest, SC. $25 for a 6-8” diameter, 4 ft long cherry wood log.

If you have a shady wet spot in your yard, one or two of these (over the next 2 or 3 or more years) will give you more than your money’s worth of fresh, nutritious and tasty mushrooms.
