With the basement walls protected from constantly damp soil, it’s time to move on to drainage. Water that could make its way to the bottom of the basement wall needs to be relieved and carried away from the “cold joint” between the concrete footing and wall pours. From there, it can either be drained to daylight or collected and pumped out. I believe it’s important to use rigid piping here because of its ability to resist crushing. On this build, we used SDR35 PVC with holes drilled in it. Filter fabric and plenty of crushed stone are used around the pipe to keep out debris.

On this build, after the basement walls are poured, the same bituminous “dampproofing” used on top of the footing is applied to the below-grade portion of the walls. Again, this is used as a capillary break on the very porous concrete and is a standard basement construction practice. Though an upgrade here to a true “waterproofing” would be better I believe money is better spent on a different product I’ll explain later.

Keeping water out of a basement, especially a finished one, is paramount as properly fixing a wet basement might require digging around the foundation and potentially destroying expensive landscaping like a garden or patio. A small but important first step in keeping basement walls dry is to provide a capillary break between the footing and stem wall. This prevents small amounts of water from migrating from a wet footing into concrete basement walls. Here, asphaltic dampproofing that will be used on the basement walls makes for a convenient and inexpensive material to combat the "rising damp" phenomenon.

🎶 "Go'n and do the two-step, then cowboy boogie..." 🤠

Many houses on basements have just one tall step into the house. This makes for an uncomfortable and relatively unsafe stair. Two steps (three risers) can make each step closer to a comfortable 7".
