Fall and winter storms in Frederick County can bring down a tree in seconds, and it always seems to land across the one driveway or lane you need to get out. Here's how our storm cleanup service works when that happens.

Safety comes first. If any lines are involved, the utility company has to clear them before anyone touches the tree, so stay well back and report it to them right away. Once it's safe, our crew sizes up how the tree is loaded. A fallen trunk can be twisted, pinned, or under tension, and cutting in the wrong spot can make it roll or spring back.

From there we open up access first, cutting a path so you can get vehicles in and out, then work through the rest of the tree, the hanging limbs, and any damaged trees nearby that could come down next. Our operators handle the heavy wood, and we clean up the brush and debris so the property is back to normal, not just passable.

Has a storm ever left you blocked in by a fallen tree, and how long did it take to get out?

Watts Tree Experts is locally owned and family operated, and that's more than a line on our website. When the company carries your family's name, every yard, driveway, and farm lane we work on becomes a reflection of it.

That shows up in the small things. Our crews treat each property the way they'd want their own treated, take time to answer questions, and don't leave until the job is done right. It's also why so much of our work comes from neighbors recommending us to neighbors across Thurmont, Frederick, and the surrounding towns.

Being rooted here means we're part of the same community as our customers. We see you at the store, at the ballfield, and along the same back roads, and we want every job to be one you'd feel good telling a neighbor about.

What's a local, family-run Frederick County business you always go back to, and why?

Keep large trees at least their mature height away from drain fields and choose smaller species nearby. Address slow drains or soggy spots by large trees promptly.

Stump grinding clears the way for lawn seeding in Frederick County by removing stumps and roots, allowing for topsoil backfill. We check buried lines before grinding. Chips can be reused as mulch or hauled away, eliminating shelter for carpenter ants.

Tight-access tree removals often require a different approach, especially for trees in fenced backyards or steep areas. These trees are typically taken down in sections from the top, with smaller equipment removing wood and brush through gates or side yards. We use ground protection mats to prevent ruts when machinery crosses lawns.

Our goal is to leave your yard looking untouched—no ruts, cracked pavers, or damaged fence posts. Planning the access route is crucial and is a key focus during our property assessment.

Is there a tree on your property you think is too hard to remove? 🌳

Every big job we take on around Frederick depends on a team where each person has a specific role. Our crews bring together climbers, rigging specialists, equipment operators, and arborists, and the work runs smoothly only when they're all in sync.

The arborist's assessment shapes the plan: which limbs come first, where the weak wood is, and whether the tree can be saved. Climbers work up in the canopy making the cuts, while the rigging team controls every piece on its way down. On the ground, operators run the chipper and heavy equipment and keep the work zone clear and safe.

Constant communication ties it all together. Before the first cut, the whole crew walks the site and agrees on drop zones and signals, and nobody moves a load until everyone is ready. That coordination is what lets us work safely over homes, barns, and power lines on properties of every size.

Have you ever stopped to watch a tree crew work in your neighborhood? What surprised you most?

A trunk wrapped in ivy can look charming, but English ivy is one of the most common problems we see on trees around Frederick. It's an invasive plant in Maryland, and once it climbs into the canopy, it starts competing with the tree for sunlight.

The bigger issue is weight and wind. A mature ivy vine can add hundreds of pounds to a tree and turn the crown into a dense mass that catches wind all winter, long after the tree itself has dropped its leaves. It also hides cracks, cavities, and fungal growth on the trunk, so problems go unnoticed until a limb fails.

The fix is simpler than most people expect. Cutting every vine at about shoulder height and pulling the ivy back a few feet from the base, sometimes called a life-saver ring, starves the upper growth so it dies back over the following months. Don't yank dead vines out of the canopy, since that can pull bark and branches down with them. If ivy has taken over a big tree, our team can check the trunk underneath once it's cleared.

Do you have any trees on your property that ivy has started climbing?

Fall can bring some of the strongest winds of the year to Frederick County, with fierce cold fronts sweeping across Catoctin Mountain and remnants of tropical systems making their way up the coast. This timing is tough on trees, as many are still fully leafed out.

A fully leafed canopy acts like a sail, and when combined with rain-soaked soil, trees with weak branch unions, root damage, or internal decay are significantly more likely to lose limbs or topple over than they would be in December, once the leaves have fallen.

Taking a moment to assess your trees now could prevent considerable issues later. Look for cracks where large limbs connect to the trunk, dead branches overhanging your house or driveway, mushrooms growing at the base, and soil that is heaving or cracking on one side of a tree after windy weather. Any of these signs warrant a check from our team before the next storm arrives.

Long gravel driveways and farm lanes are part of life in northern Frederick County, and so are the branches that slowly close in over them. By fall, a lane that was easy to drive in spring can be scraping the sides of trucks and the tops of trailers.

Clearance pruning cuts limbs back to a proper branch collar, so trees heal cleanly, instead of snapping them off with a tractor or leaving ragged stubs. We typically open lanes up to about 14 feet overhead, enough room for delivery trucks, fuel oil deliveries, farm equipment, and, most importantly, fire trucks and ambulances.

Doing this before winter matters, because snow and ice weigh down low limbs and can close a lane completely right when you need it most. Our crew can chip the brush on site and leave the lane clean, with no brush piles left along the edge.

How long is your driveway or farm lane, and does anything big ever have trouble getting down it?
