“Once in a blue moon.”
I said this to a young adult recently, and she asked what it meant. I realized I have now come to the age where I’m explaining sayings. 😩
A blue moon is when there are two full moons in a calendar month, or four full moons in an astronomical season as there are usually three. The moon is not literally blue, it looks like any other full moon (unless something in the atmosphere causes it to appear blue).
The phrase “once in a blue moon” means something that happens rarely.
Sunday, May 31, is a Blue Moon and also a Micromoon (it will appear smaller than usual because the Moon is near its farthest point from Earth). It will be the smallest full moon of 2026.
If you’re out Sunday evening, take a moment to look up. 🌕
